They probably do, just not on the same scale.

Nah, not especially. It seems these days like anyone can become an actress (Paris Hilton, anyone?), but that shouldn't downplay the few actors and actresses that have defined this generation of movies like Bogart and Cagney and Hepburn did back in the day, or even like Streep, De Niro and Newman have done in recent decades.

The pedigree of the actors today may not seem like it holds a candle to some of the leaders of the Golden Era, but you've got actors and actresses today that in fifty years will be just as heavily esteemed as some of those old school ones. I'm talking about people like Denzel Washington, Sean Penn, Hilary Swank, Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks.

I think some actors today (Harrison Ford) are just as good as the actors of yesterday

Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys), Uma Therman.. there are a few more recent talents (and not just because they're nice on the eyes).

i think that they cant be compared because they are way to different then each other

Weren't Johnny Weissmuller and Esther Williams olympic swimmers before they started acting in somewhat B-Grade movies? I think they were. So not much has changed. There will always be a load of mediocre actors, but they fade as quickly as they arrive. And there will always be those who stand out and make a respectable, life-long career of the job.

There are just more I think... and more means more bad and more good.

YEs!
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 9/3/06 - 1:23:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, not at all! I've seen a lot of great actors in the past years both young and old... granted, there aren't very MANY, but I mean there aren't that many movies of quality being made in the first place..
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 9/11/06 - 10:26:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
yes..and i miss good westerns too
13 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 10/11/06 - 9:10:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
no. Characters are more complex now and so is acting.
13 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 10/13/06 - 8:47:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
There's no doubt acting has changed, but i don't think it's for the worse.
12 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 1/26/07 - 4:38:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
no
12 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 1/27/07 - 7:57:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not at all. There are just as many great actors now as there were back then; it just *seems* like there were more good actors in past generations because that's all we remember.
No one remembers all the crappy actors from decades ago. They were crappy, so there was no reason to preserve any of their films.
The only thing that gets preserved is the cream of the crop. That's why people tend to say that music/actors/etc. were better "back in the day".

Depends. When did they 'used to make them' good? Cause if you're talking about actors to only emerge in the 21st century then God yes. The 90s had some pretty fantabulous actors. Let's not forget Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt or even Ben Affleck. Or... others. But yeah, earlier years were really the heyday of quality acting and quality filmmaking.
12 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/20/07 - 12:43:18 AM EST (GMT-5)
I really love the old movies. Bette Davis is a favorite. But there are some really good ones now. Who could top Meryl Streep?
12 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 2/20/07 - 1:22:22 AM EST (GMT-5)
I have always maintained this and continue to do so, but people need to stop living in the f*cking past, and the quality of movies and acting has greatly INCREASED. *cough*EdwardNorton*cough*
12 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 4/26/07 - 10:37:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think that all actors are different. The times are different as well. Life has gotten more complicated.
12 yrs ago - Friday 10/26/07 - 6:30:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
No,it's the quality of the scripts I think they don't WRITE them like they use to.
12 yrs ago - Friday 10/26/07 - 6:34:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sir Alec Guinness. One film. Eight Parts.

Find me a modern actor that could do that!

Kind Hearts and Coronets

In fact, just read the list.

He was an incredibly talented actor. And a gentleman too.

What a shame he did the Star Wars job. He hated it.
