American troops in Iraq are to undergo retraining in moral and ethical standards, the most senior US commander in the country announced yesterday. The order from General George Casey came as the US military investigated whether marines might have intentionally killed up to 24 unarmed civilians in the Iraqi town of Haditha on 19 November. The victims of the massacre included women, children and an elderly man, and came after a marine unit lost a man in a roadside bombing.

Do you think ethics training will help the troops in Iraq stop killing and torturing innocent civilians for no reason?

No, they didn't kill those people out of lack of ethics. But out of frustration and revenge. You can't ethics class won't stop frustration and revenge.

Yeah, I'm sure *that* will work.

Due to the fact that ALL military members recieve ethics training more than once in their career, this whole question is silly... They have recieved, therefore, if its going to change anything, this is the result. PS dont believe all liberal, military bashing propaganda, until youve served or been personally attacked by a military member, shut up.

If ethics training will stop soliders from shooting when under attack, I'm not sure it's a good thing.

Waste of time and money.

how could they give ethics training to people in a war? It'll confuze them.

I guess I didn't want to be disrespectful; it would just make them feel guilty.
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 7/4/06 - 10:35:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
it might help but if they want to torture people they're going to do it regardless.

The decisions made has nothing to do with how the persons invovled "feel" about it. LOTS of things have been ordered - and then carried out by people that would have rather done anything BUT.

tottaly agreed, it is the people in charge that are responsible, not the people carrying out the orders.

What a biased question. Lame.

To be honest, you really shouldn't need to be trained to be a normal human being.

First thing: Why are people becoming defensive at this question? It's not saying that the troops are evil or anything, it's just a question.
A raw nerve maybe?
Second thing: I agree with uncleederclam's post but really, war is not an ethical proceeding. You can't hand people a gun, tell them to kill & than expect them to feed the hungry & be nice to all the small animals.

This particular case sounds like one of revenge and anger, which can only be expected when you take an 18 year old "man" stick him somewhere where he is forced to make close bonds with a few people and then kill one of those people.

The male brain doesn't finish developing until somewhere in the late 20's. The part of the brain that finishes developing during this time is the frontal lobe, the part responsible for decision making and judgement calls.

This means 18-28 year olds make judgement calls they might not have made if they'd been older.

So you take an undeveloped brain, and then have it deal with issues that flood it with emotion, this is what you should expect.

This is recruiters fault more than anything else. Good old USA, we can go off to war, but god forbid we be allowed to drink for three more years.
