Michael Jackson is an example of someone who hated his own race.

I knew a woman who thought white people were better than everyone else, and she was native.

Yeah, although it gets a little cloudy when it's your own race you hate. Did you have that beaten into you from some other source? Is it about race or just yourself?

I've actually met a few white people who hate white people, usually with a few exceptions (one beign themselves). Usually the reasoning is something along the lines of "White people start all the wars and try to take over the world and oppress everyone."

It's definitely possible. I've seen it in people before.
It's just not very common.
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 6/8/06 - 4:30:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
You're either racist or not. Someone who is racist against one race, thinks of people in terms of their race, and is therefore a racist.

Whether you believe someone is stupid or smart because of their race, that makes your a racist, whether you believe they are strong or weak, based on their race, you are a racist.

If you believe the world owes you something, because of your race, you are a racist. If you think your race makes you better than others, you're a racist, if you believe your race makes you worse than others, you're a racist. Same if you believe someone elses race makes them better or worse than others, based on their race.

It's impossible to be a racist against say, white people or black people, but not against asian or latino people and thus be only 50% racist or something, that's bullplop.

Either you think of race as anything more than part of their appearance, and maybe a consideration in their social background, and are a racist, or you don't, and are not.

14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 6/8/06 - 4:59:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
people can be against their own race but it's pretty hypcritical.
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 6/8/06 - 5:06:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, how could you be racist against yourself.
Oh look at me, I'm a good for nothing white trash piece of crap. Like come on.
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 6/8/06 - 5:09:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, I'm racist against white people. And I am white. Stupid, I know.
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 6/17/06 - 5:55:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
people of color cant be racist b/c racism implies institutional and systemic power, which people of color dont have. so they can discrimate or be prejudiced, but not racist.

what you call self-racism here can be taken as internalized racism, which essentially means that you take all the racism the world gives you and internalize it. so its not so much being "racist" towards the self as it is a response to all the racism a person experiences

14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 6/17/06 - 6:05:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
Internalized oppression and self loathing are well doccumented sociological concepts, so yes.

So A coloured person going around saying they hate white people and not giving any reason for it other than hating white people as a collective and using derogatory terms when refering to white people is not them being racist, even though they're discriminating against a group of people based on their race?

I knew of an Aboriginal family who hated Aboriginals that much they actually denied they themselves were Aboriginal for quite some time stating they were Indian they even convinced their children that they were Indian.

I'd cite that as a reason for why it is socially acceptable for a Black comic to make fun of White people, and not (as) socially acceptable for a White comic to make fun of Black people, but other than that, you're way wrong. If your prejudice is against race, you're racist. That's what the word means. Hopefully you're just trying to get at the point of how power and institutional racism is more detrimental. For example, almost everyone has experienced at least one incident of racism against him or her at some point in life, but that doesn't mean that I, a White person, truly understand it and internalize it as a systematic thing beyond a handful of isolated incidents.
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 6/17/06 - 1:27:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
racism IS about institutions and power dynamics. so a person of color can say they hate white people all they want, but there's nothing to back that up, no way to really implement that hatred. same thing with black comics, there's nothing to systematically back those views. so yes, its prejudice, but prejudice and racism aren't the same thing. and for white people, they have all this institutional power, all these ways to actually use their hatred, so that's why its different.
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 6/17/06 - 1:32:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
i think u could be thinking of institutionalism, yes that is a word I'm not making sh*t up.
racism is discriminatino based on RACE hence RACism.... or just to make it clearer for you.

The beleife that each race or ethnic group possess specific characteristics, abilities, or qualities that distinguishes it as inferior or superior to another such group.
Discrimintaion against or antagonism towards other races or ethnic groups based on such a belief

And seeing as the word SUPERIOR is in there then yes coloured people CAN be racist even if they think that whites are more powerful because they are beliving they are SUPERIOR!!

By the way what about countries like zimbabwe? people of colour were literally kicked out COMPLETELY.

Yep, we Hispanics are all lazy. Of course that is racist, I say that because I myself am lazy and I would like to blame it on my culture because it helps me to make excuses for myself.

One of my friends jokes about it, but thats him.

I guess you could be.

There are plenty of black people who hate other black people. Specifically, its usually based on skin color. Some dark complexioned black people have issues with lighter complexioned black people.

I used to hang out with a black girl who hated black people and even denied the fact that she was black, so yeah,I guess its possible.

Uncle Ruckus.

I knew a girl at primary school who hated being mixed raced. Her mum was white and her dad who was black didn't see her, then her mum remarried to a white guy and they had a couple of kids so in a family of five she was the only one who wasn't white and I think it got to her a bit. We all thought she was really pretty but she wanted to get her hair straightened and she kept scratching her skin to make it pink. No matter how much we tried to reassure her, she was convinced that she was ugly and that she'd look better if she was white. She was quite messed up.

I think skye1 is also forgetting the fact that there are places in the world where "colored people" are in power - so they ARE capable of being racist in her little definition. So, therefore, everyone is capable of being racist.
But I don't even agree with skye1's view of what racism is. She just seems wrong all around. Bah.
