They'd want to know if something's wrong with the item.

I worked in retail several years. As NSFW said, it's mainly to know whether the item is OK to be sold again or is defective and needs to be returned to the manufacturer for credit. Also feedback from people can be helpful in knowing what items or styles to stock.

Since money is involved and returning the item will decrease their sales and thus their profits, they just wanna know if your reason is valid, I would do the same as a business man.

I think they do it to find out if there was a problem with the item so they won't put it back on the shelf.

No. But this makes me think of the jacket on Seinfeld that he tried to return for spite because he didn't like the salesman who sold it to him. So they told him he couldn't return it for spite and he said 'okay then, I just don't like it' and they were like 'sorry, you already said spite!'

i am also in retail and agree with everything said above. however, an additional reason is that sometimes you can stop the return if you know why. for example, you can convince the person of additional benefits of the product or show them how to use it differently. you can also show them new products to purchase based on what you learn about why they were not satisfied with the original product.

No, you can just tell them it didn't fit properly so you had to return it or something along those lines and they'll leave you alone.

I know they probably have a valid reason for asking, but I still hate it when they do, so I usually lie.

I don't really think so. I mean, they need to know what's wrong with it in order to fix it.

no, b/c if it's defective or something, then they have to send it back for the company. and the company will want to know the reasons etc

I think they want to know the reason because it leads to them being able to fix a probem if its defective, but they also want to protect against fraud.

Well, if you're returning it, there's obviously something wrong with it, even if it's just that you didn't like it or it wasn't quite what you thought it was. It's better than saying "No, no reason, I just wanted to give you extra work today."
