Growing old is inevitable, if you live long enough (calling it mandatory somehow doesn't feel right). I agree with the growing up-part being optional: if I have anything to say about it, I'll probably never do that.

I remember my 9th grade teacher put that phrase up on the board because we had a REALLY immature guy in our class, so he wrote it for him. And the guy just.. didn't get it. But I've never forgotten it and anytime someone gets immature, I throw that one out there. I definitely agree...

i agree with it..but i thought of it as a positive message. something to mean that it's possible to always remain a kid at heart..

No. They're both mandatory. People eventually mature, even if you don't think they ever will. Some are just slower to mature than others.

No, I think its exactly the opposite. "Old" is a state of mind. You can be elderly and be young in heart and mind. But growing up is inevitable, we'll never be able to return to our youth in body. Even though people might never mature they will be "grown up" in a sense. So...'Growing up is mandatory, growing old is optional'

^^^Everyone should remain young at heart.^^^ But that doesn't mean that they can't become responsible. Just because you grow older doesn't mean you necessarily grow up. Growing old is inevitable, it comes with time but there are many people who never become responsible adults and grow up.

Yes, but I don't think acting childish your whole life is something to strive for.

The most pathetic sight is when people grow old without growing up. I hate 40-year-olds who act like 14-year-olds.

Yes. Though growing up techically is optional, but shoot; choose to grow up! Though you may lose out on some immature fun, you will gain so much more and it's always worth it!

No, I really don't. I think its important not to be too jaded or afraid to try anything new, but I also think that with age comes experience and maturity and your behaviour should reflect that. 'Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise' said the Fool, (King Lear)

Not growing up doesn't neccessarily mean that a person stays immature it just means that they hold tightly to the things that were most important to them in their childhood. My husband is 34 years old and still plays with his transformer toys. The Transformers cartoon series made him what he is today. He has a strong sense of honor, loyalty, honesty, respect, and the ability to care for others. You tell me of someone who is "Grown up" who has these traits.
