14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 10/2/05 - 12:38:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
it's not taboo becuase the subject isn't going away any time soon. Until we can make a cheep, easy, and 100% perfect contraceptive, that people don't mind using and is easily distributed, then it will always be a subject on the minds and lips of most people.

Then again some religious organizations beleive contaceptives are evil too but i think that is a much smaller minority than the pro-life movement.

No topic is taboo for me.
14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 10/2/05 - 4:32:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Uh, not at all.

The most controversial topics in America usually fall under the umbrella of either sex, race, or religion.
Those are the Big Three that are practically guaranteed to turn into a debate if brought up in conversation, so people usually avoid them.

Yes. And this is it. Abortion touches on religious beliefs, sexual rights and beliefs, race is often brought in as a factor, and certainly ethics. Not to mention the counrty is split down the middle on how they feel about it, although recent surveys have shown the US leaning more pro-life.

14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/10/05 - 3:32:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
religion, gender, ethics, race, age....most things are controversial anymore
14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/10/05 - 8:57:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
i wouldn't say the only subject but possibly one of the biggest.
14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/10/05 - 9:01:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
Taboo in what way? Talking about it? Debating it? I think people are willing to do either. Admit to having had one? That may be off-limits, but so too is drug use, domestic violence, infidelity, and a variety of other activities that are either illegal, immoral, or controversial.
I think it's almost always more acceptable to condemn something than it is to defend something, so a person decrying something like abortion could shame into silence several more people who are within earshot.
14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/10/05 - 9:02:38 PM EST (GMT-5)

In America abortions are fully legal. Most other countries have some form of restrictions or guidelines the mother has to meet to have an abortion (such as harm to the mother, child may be handicapped, etc), but in America, a prefectly healthy woman and abort a perfectly normally baby any time she wants for any reason.
