NEW YORK Apr 27, 2005 — Maggie Gyllenhaal has waded into sensitive political waters by raising questions about Sept. 11 and American foreign policy. The 27-year-old actress, who stars in a new film about the 2001 terror attacks on the World Trade Center, said in an interview last week that the United States 'is responsible in some way' for the attacks.

In a statement issued Monday by her publicist, Gyllenhaal said Sept. 11 was 'an occasion to be brave enough to ask some serious questions about America's role in the world. Because it is always useful as individuals or nations to ask how we may have knowingly or unknowingly contributed to this conflict.

'Not to have the courage to ask these questions of ourselves is to betray the victims of 9/11.'

She also expressed her grief for 'everyone who suffered and everyone who died in the catastrophe.'

Do you agree with what Maggie Gyllenhaal said about 9/11?

I agree with what she said. There is nothing wrong with saying that we need to evaluate our place in the world. If people are willing to do such awful things like what they did on 9/11, we need to figure out what we have done to make other countries think of us as such a target.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 9:35:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
What "we" did? Hell, none of us civilians have done anything wrong to other countries. Therefore the attacks were unjustified. If they had an issue with what the government or military was doing, it would have been more accurate to bomb/run a plane into them, not us.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 9:37:05 AM EST (GMT-5)
Not responsible for the attacks, responsible for f**king up the response by attacking the WRONG country, TWICE!!
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 9:37:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
Heather, "we" elected the officials that give us a bad name. "We" have more say in what happens than you think.

Her direct quotes are outstanding. I could see how the American right would skew it into something un-American, though.
I liken it to any problem or issue in someone's life. Let's take a car accident, for example, where someone else is at fault. Even when it isn't your fault, you may reflect on what you might have done to avoid it: braking sooner, swerving the other direction, etc. It doesn't make you at fault, but it is appropriate to reflect.

Also Heather, what did you think of them flying a plane into the Pentagon? Is that not a govt. run building, full of govt. workers?
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 5/7/05 - 9:08:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, kindof.
I'm not saying that we deserved it, not at all, just the our meddling in the Middle East isn't (wasn't) going to win us any friends.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 5/8/05 - 12:50:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. What did we do that was so awful all of a sudden?
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 5/8/05 - 3:16:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
We didn't necessarily do anything "so awful all of a sudden," hallowedcry, but when the smoke has cleared and we've assessed the blame, all of which lies elsewhere in this case, it is reasonable to consider ways we could have prevented people from wanting to do this to us.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 5/8/05 - 3:20:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
It is tactless
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 5/8/05 - 10:04:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not even blaming Bill Clinton for this, but he really could have done something about Bin Laden.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 5/9/05 - 5:46:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
W could have, too. Clinton told him, but he didn't want to listen to someone from the other party.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 5/9/05 - 8:59:31 AM EST (GMT-5)
Si, how on earth is what she said tactless? She worded it so eloquently.

I really do agree with what she said.

How about this: When something bad happens to you, do you sit and try to think what happened and what you and other people did to make it happen, or do you just blame someone else?

15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 5/9/05 - 9:15:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
She seems to be an articulate, realistic person. There is nothing malicious or misguided in what she said.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 5/14/05 - 12:34:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's not malicious, I'm just slightly annoyed and nonetheless not very surprised that she (among all the other so-called "liberal" actors and actresses) is going to join the bandwagon and blame America.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 5/15/05 - 2:50:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd have said that she's seeking to understand the situation, not blaming the US, and I'd agree with that.
15 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 5/30/05 - 4:57:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
I absolutely agree.
14 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Monday 11/14/05 - 7:21:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
In a sense yes. The US has done a simliar thing to other countries, just blown them up for no reason.

Interesting. That seems like a good way of putting it.

Just another dimwitted Liberal actor/actress trying to fit in with the Hollywood in crowd and making outrageous comments to speed up that process......justifying what those Animals did on 9/11 is asinine...trying to call that intelligent debate is equally asinine

Dude, ignoring this kind of opinion is just going to do you more harm.

Kaneda, don't bother. In all honesty, some people are so beyond reproach in their blissful ignorance that there's just no point in arguing or trying to even show them something.
14 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Monday 11/14/05 - 7:36:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
What did she say that was "outrageous"?

I generally agree with her, but I'm always a bit offended when famous people think it is appropiate to spew out their political beliefs any time.

I'm also offended that a reporter would ask her something about the 9/11 attacks just because she happens to be fim about them. It isn't any different than asking James Caviezel religious questions because he was in the Passion of the Christ or Geena Davis political questions because she's in Commander in Cheif. It's all a bit sickening.

Sorry but I live in NYC and I smelled dead burning bodies for 3 weeks following the attacks.....I know families devastated by the thing she is trying to justify....What they did was hideous, there is no justification for it period, end of story. Call me close minded, I don't really care.

At least you know you're closed minded.
