Do you think the prequel Star Wars films have made as much of an impact as the original trilogy both culturally and in terms of film-making?

Not really for me..... I'm a huge fan, but the prequels leave a bit to be desired.... granted the fight sequences are cooler than the first and the sound rocks too, but you need more than that to beat the original trilogy. They just don't have the 'BANG' the first trilogy had....

no, the first was groundbreaking, but the others basically just followed after the shock value of the first wore out.

The Prequels are nothing compared to the classics.

Episodes I and II were nothing but drivel to satisfy star wars geeks. They were all space politics and no action. Basically, they sucked.

I've never seen a Star Wars movie, so I can't comment. I don't get out much....

The original trilogy created enduring characters, quotes, and images.

The prequals gave us Jar Jar and two whiney Anakins. But they did give us the pod racers, yellow naboo fighters, and battle droids, but that's about it.

It's not possible. The effect of the original Trilogy is unparalleled in the way it changed the way movies are made.

Often enough it occurs to me that people like the older movies, regardless of title just because they are older, WHEN the new ones are without question better.

This is NOT, NOT, NOT the case.

The original Trilogy was a feat- underbudget and pushed for time, they created a movie of incredible magnitude. Very ahead of it's time. You really CANNOT beat the classics. At all. Not this time.

So no.

Ok, listen up!

Goetic, what do you mean after the shockwaves wore off the original trilogy? Twenty years is one hell of a shock wave. George Lucas waited this long in order to have the technology he wanted in the first place and for no other reason.

Mr.Minty, Ep1 & Ep2 are political and are meant to be. Star Wars is the story of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. It is completely about him and his journey from light to dark side and back again. The prequels are to explain his story.

And finally, no the prequels don't pack as much punch as the original trilogy, it would be impossible for one man to completely change the face of cinema twice in one lifetime.

okay, i like the prequels better and they have more of an impact on me because of one thing...really cute guys. the classics were good, but there was no eye-candy.

episode 3 in spring jsut whe you thought it was over.

No, I wish they never made the prequels.
16 yrs ago - Thursday 1/6/05 - 3:01:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
no, seeing as how the prequels were almost universally hated.
16 yrs ago - Thursday 1/6/05 - 9:09:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Episode II is the worst movie ever made. I mean, the acting was the worst I've seen in my life. The script was dumb, as was the plot. Everything about that movie screamed that it was made for 10 year olds. Just look at all the names of the new places, Naboo, Dooku, Jar Jar. All that is just to make money...
16 yrs ago - Friday 1/7/05 - 4:50:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
How long before the prequels came out on video compared to the originals. That should answer your question.

You guys have no idea what you're all talking about.

"Episodes I and II were nothing but drivel to satisfy star wars geeks."

They failed miserably, then. As someone who's read nearly every Star Wars book in the world, and loved the movies...I hated the first two episodes. The story was bland, the actors even worse. (The guy who played Anakin as a teenager? Blech! No acting ability whatsoever. He doesn't even have the looks to get away with it.) The ONLY good part was the special effects, and they were over-used...probably to make up for the rest of the movie.

And the original Star Wars wasn't political, that's true. It was more religious/philosophical. But seriously, couldn't he have written an actual PLOT as opposed to blatant political junk with a bit of sickening romance thrown in?

16 yrs ago - Friday 1/7/05 - 5:26:05 AM EST (GMT-5)
I actually like the second one. And the first one a little. The moral/philosophical/spiritual themes (moreso in Episode II) were well pronounced and rather interesting.

But yeah, the classic trilogy was better and far more influencial, groundbreaking, and culturally important.

So far as I know, the only thing ground breaking about the prequel trilogy is that Episode II is the first major film shot entirely on digital.

But George Lucas's first big sin was when he put Ewoks in place of Wookies. After that it was more and more about selling toys.

Roteg, if you've read every Star Wars book as you say you have, then you haven't been reading George Lucas' story. He endorses them only as spin offs. And you're all missing the point. The Star Wars story is about Anakin/Darth Vader and his journey. It's not about Luke or Han or Leia, they are critical characters but they are not the focus. It is a political story, if you don't like, don't watch it. Of course Jar Jar could be disposed of without too much of an outcry from fans, and I guess every master is allowed a few forgivable mistakes.

Remember, if we didn't have Star Wars, we would have no Indianna Jones, no Titanic, no Lord Of The Rings, no Harry Potter and nothing for non-fans to complain about.

"the classics were good, but there was no eye-candy"
No Eye candy? Pah! I grew up with a huge crush on Mark Hamil, and I'm sure there's many people who think Harrison Ford's pretty cute. :P
16 yrs ago - Tuesday 1/11/05 - 1:34:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
who's Mark Hamil? Harrison Ford was pretty cute, but there's not joy in looking at him. Hayden Christianson was way better looking.

Are you freakin kidding me?!?!?!???
16 yrs ago - Tuesday 1/11/05 - 2:39:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
I hate star wars
16 yrs ago - Tuesday 1/11/05 - 5:07:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
Personally the orginals have had a major impact on me as oppose to the prequels. I grew up watching the orginals, as my dad is a big fan. They helped shaped the many childhood fantasies my imagiantion led me on. Plus a note on the eye candy issues... Harrison Ford... more so in his younger days, but still hasn't lost it.
