This is a good question.. I don't think it denies any of their religious rights. There are a lot of polygamist men who use their religion to justify their sexual desires, and many Mormons also marry underaged girls-which is against the law and has nothing to do with religion. Mormon men are completely free to live together with multiple women and call them their wives, it just won't be recognized in the eyes of the law...
And another thing: Why is it that only men can have multiple wives? Why can't women have multiple husbands if they chose to do so? The fact that they can't seems sexist to me.

wanderlust, your right. Mormonism is not a religion but a cult. There reason for multiple marriages is that when they were persicuted back east and a lot of the men were either killed or arrested they left their woman alone. So they approved polygamy. It is totaly against the bible. Mormons even believe that God and Jesus were married and that you are married in heaven. All womans job is to have spirit babies in heaven. They are a lower class subject to the men. I could tell some real horror stories about them. I used to be one but I got out of it. My grandfather had 3 wives and 26 kids. He was a very stanch mormon. If you want get a copy of a book called MaMa, mormonism and me. Its written by, I believe, was a decendent of Brigham Young a mormon leader. No, its not against there rights. Its against the law to have more than one wife. Just think, more than one wife=more than one mother-in-law. If they let them have their way then the people who believe in having sex with kids will have

Although polygamy is still in their scriptures, Mormans are instructed not to practice it in this life. In heaven they will be allowed to.

to have there way. Then it will open the door for all kinds of perverted beliefs.

Thats right wise. Have you ever read the book of mormon? They have a lot of wierd ideas in it.

No, I haven't read it, but I have done some research on Mormans. That Joseph Smith seems like the all time best used car salesman to me. Have you ever been through a temple ceremony? From what I understand they are pretty mysterious.

Every example of polygamy in the Old Testament turns out bad. I can't quote the reason why poligamy is now considered to be unscriptural, but I can't see how anyone who pays attention to what Jacob went through would want to try it themselves. Besides. I'm busy enough keeping one woman happy.

You're right snarf, it polagmy never turned out good in the accounts we have of it in the Bible. The reason it never worked was because God was not for it from the start. Just because the Bible mentioned people having more then one wife didn't mean it was acceptable to God.

polagamy also encourages inbreeding especially in small communities.Eventually everyone is going to be related.

ohhh this makes me so mad!! im a 'mormon' if thats what you want to call it. its actually church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. please all of you dont go on about soemthing you very clearly do not understand! Polygamy is now considered VERY wrong ok and not a living practice. Jarhead is right in saying that the reason it went about in Joseph Smith's time was because of the wars and lack of men to support the women. It was a commandment from God at that time for a reason and purpose, it was also something not everybody was asked to live. not all relationships were physical, please understand that. it really annoys me when peoeple going on about mormons having 6 wives and 30 children. we are not a cult!! we are a religion! Yes there are people that call themseves mormons i think, they are people that live as pioneers and that did not go on with those that went to Salt Lake. they are not part of our religion, do not confuse them with us. They sin by practicing polygamy...

...also it bugs me how Mormons are the ones that get picked on for polygamy when it was practiced in the bible for the same reasons. we DO NOT practice it now, get over it and stop spreading untrue rumours

It's just a question, god.

its important to me and thousands of others. dont go offending us when you understand absolutely nothing of the truth
10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 2:13:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
i believe there is some truth in relatively recent cases of Mormon polygamy. They didn't all end in Biblical times.
10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 2:17:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
polygamy is not allowed by the mormon church for about the last 100 years or so.
there are plenty of people who leave the mormon church to practice this abomination..especially out here in the western united states..

Laws against homosexuality are being challenged and changed because, 'what goes on behind the doors of consenting adults' is none of the governments business. Mormons or whatever group that want to practice polygamy as part of their religion are being denied their religious freedoms.

"its important to me and thousands of others. dont go offending us when you understand absolutely nothing of the truth"

I didn't offend you. How?

10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 2:35:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
the problem with the polygamy practicing cults out here is that it isn't consenting adults..it's 14 year old girls being forced to become their uncle's 9th wife..
10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 2:36:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
and they're trying to use it to defraud welfare, etc.
10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 2:57:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
I saw a documentary about polygmous mormons in Utah and Western Canada and they were financially self sufficient. If the government sends the bread winners to prison, they choose to make the families depend on welfare.

I doubt underage girls are being forced to marry their relatives or we'd hear about them alot more than we do.

10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 3:04:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
GoManGo, I've read about polygomy cases involving "Mormons" (or what you will, so as not to offend anyone) that did involve underage girls.
10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 3:10:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
there are groups of them being prosecuted for activities involving underage girls here in utah. lot's of birth defects from the inbreeding too.

i don't fault the mormons on this. i really don't. these groups leave mormon church and go off to practice their perverted lifestyle. and it's interesting that the church is more critical of these groups than the government is except in the cases where there is abuse and fraud involved.

When Timothy McVeih blew up the Edward R Murrah building in Oklahoma, it was revealed that he was a Roman Catholic. Nobody ever suggested that isolated case was promoted by the Roman Catholic Church.

Same thing with the Mormons who still practice polygamy. It can't be a common practice among them or Janet Reno would have stormed in and burned them out. We only thing we ever hear about them are the isolated instances that make news.

10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 3:26:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
OK I didn't see the post that says you are from Utah. I bet you do hear more minutae on the subject than I would.
10 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 3/7/04 - 4:42:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
then again, in all fairness, the media is going to make a story on the groups where there are abusive practices going on..and living here, that's what i'm going to see in the paper..
