Yes, it should be illegal -or- someone keeping an eye on politicians money. We can't have politicians declaring an area industrial, and then switch it back to residential area. It can be exploited.

we don't need them legislating business like they did for the auto insurance industry they were so heavily invested in either

You mean, should we be more concerned about conflict of interest and special contracts like those being received by Bechtel and Halberton? Making it illegal is probably not feasable, but there should be some accountability.

I thought it was all ready illegal for them to have outside investments. I have heard that when they take office or before, they have to sell all that stuff. Mainly for that reason, that is, conflict of interest so no one can have any special favours.

Yes, but if you think it actually ends up working that way. . . . . . even if they don't own companies or have shares in them, they do have buddies that do - or those companies make substantial campaign contributions. Just to be clear and make sure I don't bring hell down upon myself, this is true of both parties.

I'm not sure that one can always tell what they own--mutual funds can be made up of any number of stocks that may change as the funds manager sees fit. I would think that as long as everything is disclosed, it isn't bad.

I believe there is not enough money in politics. I think the best way to do it is have them wear their contributors logos on their jackets like the NASCAR drivers, and public can judge for itself if it likes who you associate with.

Why are you guys raggin on politicians like that. They're the ones who control our government! *looks around* Okay, the coast is clear . Anyway, all politicians are greedy and corrupt, and the deepest layers of hell are reserved for all of them to burn in

it would depend on the amount of control that the politician had over any particular area. I mean, if Rumsfeld (god, i wanna punch the living sh*t outta that man) were to buy heavily in a military company's stock, knowing secretly that plans were underway to increase american fighting in Iraq, that would be cheating, of course. But should the mayor of Kirkwood be allowed to buy stock in Sony? Yes.

Depends on the country, Mexico, for example, allows the high ranking military officials to buy hotels and the ilk, so that the government doesn't have to worry about a military coup, as do most Latin American countries. But if you take most industrialized nations, I would say that they shouldn't.

I figure as long as they aren't lying about anything, like more money for education, or GOING TO WAR FOR OIL *cough cough* bush *cough*, then I don't really care.

Yes. It's bad for a country to employ corrupt government officials. They can be bribed or influenced to sponsor or support laws, regs, etc., that are not in the public interest. Even US Secretary of the Treasury, Snow, a multibillionaire recognizes the importance of this government principle, and is finally doing something about it, hehe. Snow red-faced over investment boo-boo
