The only way it should be prohibited is if there is a valid safety concern. Even then, I don't see why they couldn't be checked in private then sent on their way with their scarves.

I think it depends on the country. In the U.S., I think it should be allowed, because we have the right to express our religion in our dress and adhere to our religion, but in other countries, if you're not allowed to wear yarmulkas or crosses, then you shouldn't be allowed to wear a headscarf either.

They should prohibited to enter this country.

Andybarron you're an idiot.

I don't like this question. That French law is not aimed at Muslims, it's aimed at ALL religious symbols.

I don't think Islam should be singled out... NO to the question, YES to Chirac's law
16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 3:56:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
no, if their religion requires it.

This is clearly a violation of someone's right to religious freedom, how dispicable.
16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 7:31:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
I did a current event on this story...no, i think religious symbols shouldnt be banned.
16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 7:33:18 PM EST (GMT-5)

16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 8:54:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
What this question fails to mention is that not only are headscarves banned, but other religious identifying headgear. I can see some upsides and downsides to this. On one hand, you're infringing on the religious freedoms. On the other hand, there has been increasing violence towards Jewish (and Muslim in some cases) students. Banning anything that might identify them as part of a particular religion might prevent from such violence from even occuring.

I think that part has already been mentioned on this thread.
If kids are suffering from persecution, can't they just choose to stop wearing the garb?
16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 9:04:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
Isn't that like telling a Black guy to stay in his house to prevent his neighbor from making racist comments to him? I don't see why people should have to change their lives to accomodate the intolerant.

16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 9:06:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
That's more like telling a gay person not to make out in public if he's hanging out in Texas.
It's hardly changing their lives just to stop wearing a garb.

I think they should have the choice, rather then being just forced to remove it.

16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 9:11:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Apparantly, since most people don't wear them, there was always a choice--people should continue to enjoy the freedom to express themselves.

If you want to ban something, do away with the Punks or Goths...

No not the punks or goths, they're too goodlooking!
16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 9:26:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
Actually the French law is aimed at Muslims. It’s also discriminatory, unethical, and inhumane. It’s discriminatory, unethical and inhumane regardless of what country it’s in.

Cowdung:I totally agree.

Islam has been held under a gun for a very long time. People need to realize that Islam does not advocate violence and supports tolerance. It is obvious that people who wish to "do away" with Islam are trying very hard in all facets of society. Tolerence is the only road to peace. We don't have to love one another but we do need to respect each others right to free will and choice.
