When you see that an American film is a `sequel` do you expect it to be a continuation of the original story or just a cheap remake of the first story?

The sequels now are more of "sequels" than they used to be, but mostly I don't think about it until I've seen the movie.

It depends if thre was room to continue the story in the first place. The original Star Wars had room for more story development, so a sequel was logical. However, movies like Scary Movie should have never gotten the sequel treatment, those are just quick studio cash cows.

^^^ I agree.

Some movies scream out for more sequels (Star Wars) and some have you screaming no more sequels (Scary Movie)

A great sequel was X-men 2

It depends on the movie series.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Friday 12/5/03 - 8:56:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
continuation...although it depends on if the sequel was planned or decided on after the first one...i think if it was preplanned it's more likely to be a continuation
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 12/9/03 - 11:55:54 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think its a cheap and horrible continuation. Does that work?
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 12/10/03 - 2:41:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think continuation... that's what sequel is supposed to be, isn't it?

But when two movies exist with the same name... I think the second is a cheap crappy recreation.

17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 12/10/03 - 2:43:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Depends on the first movie, and how it ended.

Is it just me, or have there been more sequels than usual lately?
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 12/11/03 - 3:54:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
I expect it to be a stretch of the first... same plot, same characters, slight changes..
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 12/14/03 - 11:45:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
Great question...I think most of the time it's a way just to make more money, and there's little regard for product quality. Some franchises and/or stories though demand sequels.

heh, Freddy vs Jason.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 12:38:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think it depends if it's disney or not... isney always has crappy remakes... Usually normal movies are continuation
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 8:06:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
The only sequel I've ever liked is Toy Story 2.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 8:47:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
Totally depends on the movie. Home Alone sequals all bugged me cuz they were all about the same thing. He got left home alone. Over and over again. Geez.. what an aweful mother... in real life if that had happened that many times they would've called social services on that family and taken that kid away.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 12/18/03 - 11:00:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
The good sequals are continuations. Crappy ones like Home alone are remakes.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Friday 12/19/03 - 9:27:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
it depends... for e.i Lord of the Rings is awsome!!! and their not "cheap sequals" and some movies are just pain stupid in the first try so they try to remake it into a better one, but it just comes out being stupider... anyways sometimes they do try to just simply get more money... and there sure enough have been alot of sequals now a days... kinda boring for a minute... Bad Boys2, 2 that 2 this....it got Boring... nothing new out in the movies business... but thank god theyve closed that Chapter
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 12/20/03 - 11:31:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
most sequels that come out ARE crappy remakes...i honestly cant think of a sequel to a movie that was better then the first...
continuations dont count as sequels, those are always good...
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 12/20/03 - 1:14:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
cheap remake for sure, espessially if it is Disney
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 12/20/03 - 6:44:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think that for the most part, sequels don't work at all. Why? Because the main (and often only) interest lies in trying to capitalize on an original movie's hit (or success). One that did work well, was the 2nd X-Men movie-which in my opinion far outdid the first. But that's a rarity.

Hm...in the summer they seem to be out simply to make money. In the winter they appear for the coveted oscar nods. 90% of the time a sequel is not needed. In fact 90% of the endings on first ones are not needed because they're simply an opportunity to make part 2.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 12/20/03 - 7:05:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
when it comes to Hollywood I expect rehash.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 12/22/03 - 1:51:10 AM EST (GMT-5)
Some films demand a sequal (as in second movie
continuing from the first) either because it was that good, or didnt finish the story. Like Lord of the rings.
sequels though, normaly arent as good as the orinal. There are exceptions though
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 10:12:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
Isn't a sequal SUPPOSED to be a continuation?
