I don't think it's responsible, per se, but I'm sure they're linked. If I had to have a theory, I'd say the rise in eating disorders was responsible for the rise in cosmetic surgery, not the other way round. Eating disorders often start way before a person is legally allowed to have the surgery.

Partly responsible probably...

no. media is respinsible for portraying cosmetic surgery and insanely skinny people as desirable and attractive. society is responsible for buying into it. parents are responsible for failing to teach their kids to be proud of what they are and happy with their natural state. school bullies are responsible for picking on the ugly kids.

cosmetic surgery is just one of the many tools by which the PEOPLE of our society influence others to have things like eating disorders.

I don't think they are responsible, I think the media is, as ntropy said. Cosmetic surgery is used for so many more things than just liposuction ... it's the anorexic models that our society praises that makes eating disorder rates so high. A size 8 used to be considered perfectly thin, but that's now what 'plus-size' models start at. Add that to newer fashions that show off a lot more of our bodies, an overabundance of OTC diet drugs that are available, and how society ridicules and looks down on bigger people, and it's no wonder 1 in 4 girls will have an eating disorder by the time they are 18.

I agree ntropy, the media and pop culture are responsible...

Actually, most studies say that the desire to be thin or "beautiful" isn't the reason that most girls have eating disorders. It may start out for these reason, but it continues because of a feeling of helplessness and a feeling that your life is out of your control. I imagine when you feel out of control that knowing you can control how your body looks and what you put into your mouth is empowering.

No, low self esteems and insecure teenagers cause eating disorders.

no, eating disorders are prevalent in media remote places of the world such as areas in Africa as yet unadulterated with western influence. I agree with unhailey it's an issue of control and in eating disorder studies in Europe and America anorexia has been correlated with controlling stifling mothers - bulemia however was not.
