My gut feeling is that it will never happen.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 8/19/03 - 9:58:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
It will happen. There are already committees set up to make it a reality.

The difficulty is that the two Koreas are so different from one another. South Korea is so developed and the North is so poor. North Korea has never been exposed to the world in its history.

Since the period of the "Hermit Kingdom", when all of Korea closed itself off to the rest of the world, then becoming a Japanese colony under authoritarian overseers, to communist dictatorship.....the people of the North have never had any real interaction with the rest of the world.

I have read that the plan is that once unification is agreed to, they will keep the borders closed for about 20 more years so that they can build the North Korean infrastructure and economy so that it has some kind of parity with that of the South. Otherwise South Korea will be overrun with refugees from the North and unscrupulous Southerners will exploit Northerners.

Maybe after the little big man up north fires off his nukes, the two Koreas will become united as the largest glass parking lot on the planet.

They are making amends to, but I think if it were to happen, it would be when I am about to die.

I can see N. Korean communism falling, but I don't see it reuniting with S. Korea.
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Saturday 11/8/03 - 10:22:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes. I can see North Korea taking over South Korea...
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 11/16/03 - 7:14:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
I have no idea. I don't really pay attention to that kinda thing.
16 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 12/19/03 - 3:17:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think one of them make nuke the other.
16 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 8/10/04 - 10:47:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think that they will, because so much can happen in a short time. The Berlin wall collapsed, and East and West Germany united, as well as the separation of most of the former soviet republics when Communism fell there. I hope that they combine, and the North becomes like South Korea, but it may be that the North goes down the route of China, keeping a corrupt, one-party government in power while ruining the natural landscape and "Americanizing" it's food and farming industries, all of which would lead to a just plain icky standard of living.

Like tsurumi said, it would take a significant number of years before N and S Korea are compatible enough for unification.

a picture of two brothers temporarely reunited in Korea.

They will unite, and they will do it in the next twenty years. Saying it will never happen is ridiculous. The country is divided not by ethnic lines, but by political idealogies forced on them by foreign nations. Political affiliation never lasts. After all, didn't we use to think The US and the USSR will always be enemies?

How does one be hosent?

I really hope that North and South Korea reunite and North Korea catches up technologically and economically. I'd be surprised if things hadn't got a lot better within 30-40 years.

I don't think so and I don't really think it would be a good thing, in the short term. Reunification would just bring down SK anyway you look at it. Forced(by NK) is bad, so would mutual, because they'd have to pump so much money into NK that the economy would be ruined.

There would be a period of adjustment. East Germany needed a lot of money from West Germany and other countries after reunification, and West German suffered in the following 10 years, but in the end it balanced out. Of course it's a little more extreme in Korea, but I think lots of money will be put into it, almost as a celebration of the fall of communism there.

The world will be a much safer place after Korea reunites.
