you shouldn't necessarily consider it rude
after all if they didn't say that, then it means they haven't considered your significant goal as being potent and it no longer becomes a standard for them
if you raise the standard, then it means its appreciated and people see you as 'more then you where' rather then just an 'average' obstacle

Mmm, I'd think of it as a back-handed compliment.

Rude, I'd be insulted by that.

I'd take it as a cpompliment. It's essentially saying that they have more respect for me now because they know I can achieve such things. Then I'd say something like "Ya, well, if you thought I was gonna fail, then I'd have to succeed. Your always wrong anyways"

They're just saying you've exceeded expectations, and that's a compliment. At least to me.

They're usually trying to be funny, and if I'm basking in the joy of just having accomplished it, I'm sure I'll take it that way.

When I turned 18 I was told that people didn't think I would live to be 18 because they were sure I was going to kill myself. I think it was supposed to be encouragement that I had come a long way.

Encouraging. If they were trying to be rude, they'd have told me a long time ago that I *won't* make it.

It would depend on who said it, and if I detected any malice. I have relatives who I know would just be kidding, and some who would say it to step on me.
