Do you know of any other non-formal place besides YouThink where correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word usage make up the verbal social norm?

Everywhere I go, correct grammar/spelling/diction is important. Whether it's online or in your real life, speaking and writing well is an important skill to have. Either way, you will look ignorant if you don't have a grasp on it.

I agree Kiki, but I don't down people who can't spell. Some have a natural tendency to be better at it then others. My bf is straight off the boat from Poland and can't spell for a lick!! But I don't hold it against him.

Nit picking about spelling and punctuation on the net are the tools of those that have no other way to criticize your posts. Laughable really, as a number of factors can determine a person's skills in thse areas, many unrelated to intelligence, education or validity. They may be a poor typist. They may be typing in a foriegn language. They may be distracted by multitasking. They may have a learning disability such as dyxlexia. They may just be lazy. They might just be using an alternate spelling to the one that you take to be common. Spelling only began to be standardized with the advent of printing. Ye olde spelling did not make the words sound different. Y was the way some people spelt the sound TH. Rough and Plough are examples of how spelling was applied arbitarily by people such as William Caxton and how spelling is just a matter of common useage in the same way that words get corrupted, adopted and discarded.

I usually make a point of spelling properly. I'm just a bit anal like that. I do make a habit of inadvertently missing out words in sentences though...
