I don't worry about US oil dependence, because if we wanted to spend the money and trash our nature reserves we would never need to buy oil elsewhere. I worry about polluting our planet by burning carbon based fuels (oil, trees, and support development of non-polluting alternate energy sources.

Yes, especially since the internal combustion engine is outdated. Unfortunately, too many greedy corporate slugs would have to sell their mansions and Rolls Royces if we suddenly did something good for the environment and switched to alternative engines.

Algore--Is that you?
I would guess that the 'greedy corporate slugs' will just have the 'alternative engines' installed in their Rolls Royces. Why would anyone have to sell their mansion because of alternative engines?

I'm worried about the U.S's dependance on oil in general, what with it being a finite resource and all.

we have plenty of oil in the u.s. we have several billions of barells untapped reserves. they also are able to synthetically produce oil using genetically engineered corn.

not nearly enough. If you covered the whole planet in GM corn you couldn't grow enough oil to satisfy the world's needs.

i worry about it because it is a symbol of materialist we are and because if we tried, we could find other ways to live. of course it would take getting used to, but it would be better. we're supposedly the greates country in the world but why are we so dependent on something like this? there are other ways to live.

There is more than enough oil locked up in shale to keep the US going at it present consumption for the next century.
