Not personally, but one of my best friends goes to a Christian school and a lot of her friends there aren't allowed to read Harry Potter.

I go to a Catholic school and they encourage us to read Harry Potter! It's just a fictional children's book, people! Saying that it actually promotes witchcraft is like saying that The Fairly Oddparents does too! Does that mean it should be banned from TV??

No.. my best friends sister loves reading Harry Potter and her father's a vicar! He even read a couple of them and, as with most of the population, just thinks they're great kids stories.

When my daughter was 9 she used to go to a church with my ex until they told her she shouldn't read Harry Potter books because they are evil. She thought that it was ridiculous to think Harry Potter was evil. At the age of 9 she recognized stupidity and acted accordingly. Way to go baby, way to go.

No, I like Harry Potter, If I have children, I won't forbid them to read it.

This is completely late. I'm probably the only person who actually looks at really old posts and actually says something about them... but I'm pretty sure that thing about the book burnings is true. I think I read that some catholic churches were burning the books when they first came out.
13 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 2/2/07 - 6:17:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, but their kids probably read them anyway.

Yes, my uncle's sister's kids (not blood related to me). I received Harry Potter "Scene it!" for Christmas, and brought it to my Uncle's house to play with my cousin (whose also a big fan) and his cousins had to leave the room because Harry Potter was considered sinful and evil.

What a load of shizz.

Yes, the lady down the street from me. She also took her kids out of the public school system because they wouldn't allow her kids to bring in bibles. I think it's really ridiculous, though.

It's just a story. Like Lord of the Rings. Which, co-incidentally, JK Rowling has borrowed heavily from. You're right donnaB. Miss Rowling has achieved one thing, and that's to get children reading again, however it is an even more remarkable achievement that she hasn't been sued for plagarism.

I have read both Tolkien's and JKR's works. I fail to see where there is plagiarism. Most of the fantasy based literature in centuries past (yes, centuries) derive many of their ideas from old Norse legends or mythologies, etc. What you accuse her of doing seems a bit harsh at best, and at worst, an uneducated stab at another's credibility .

Yes, sadly I even know people who are attempting to have them removed from the school libraries, which would essentially ban them from many kids who can not readilly access books outside of school.

No that's pretty ridiculous. Has anyone heard of Laura Mallory? She's trying to get the books band from schools in some state. I think it's great if kids like and will read them why would you stop that?

I'm a huge HP nerd myself =]

13 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 6/24/07 - 3:27:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
Nope. Though if I had some of the same old friends, they might not have been allowed to read them. *shrug*

No way.

I know a girl who refuses to celebrate Halloween because it's 'against her religion' but she's obsessed with Harry Potter...
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 7/8/07 - 5:45:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Ehh, indirectly. My brother's classmate in kindergarten had psycho parents who forbade him from watching cartoons, reading Harry Potter, some other stuff.

I'm Mormon and none of the members I know forbade me from reading HP, so...
