my neighbor won't let her son read them. Then she saw me reading the fifth book one day and told my mom that i was "evil" for reading them which is stupid.

I live in Alabama so I know a handful of people like that. One girl in the 5th grade said she would rather die than read one of the Harry Potter books. She also thought I was a demon child for having red hair. I think I have made my point.

Human rights? It's not like anyone's refusing you a fair trial, or searching your house without a warrant.

I think that the people who think that they're evil are just reaching for something negative about it. It's just as easy to find a Christian theme within those books, such as Harry's mother giving her life for his, etc.

I sure do. I live in the Bible belt. HP is WRONG!

Harry Potter doesn't accurately depict witchcraft. If you read the books, you'll see that they aren't "evil".

I have a 4 year old son who loves harry potter. I do not encourage it or deny it. I do try to limit it.

The problem with harry potter books/movies from the stand point of a christian, is that they make something that is evil (witchcraft- expressly forbidden in the bible) seem like a good thing. It can lure peopel into a complacency and acceptance of things that are wrong.

I know that they're just stories, but it concerns me. I do make sure to explain to my son that witchcraft is wrong, and that the movies are make believe. I don't want him to grow up in a vaccum, and I feel that forbidden things become desired things, but knowlege is power.

I do know several people who won't allow thier children to watch or read them (I am a member of a southern baptist church, need I say more?), and I don't see anything wrong with that.

P.S. I know that they are not an accurate portrayal of witch craft. My problem is with the fact that it is portrayed as a good thing makes it more desireable. I had a problem with similar issues when i was a kid. I was obsessed with witches and magic, because of the books and stories I was exposed to. I don't want this happening to my son.

I think that there are many things that should be looked at with caution, and that it pays to always be honest with your children and discuss things that are important to you and them.

There are many things that can be explored and someone with the right mindset can find teaching examples in many things even if they are not inherantly "good" or ideal.

Witchcraft and Harry Potter evil? Give me a break. LOL.

If I had a very small child, I probably wouldn't let them read the books. Not because of any concern about witchcraft or anything silly like that, but I just don't think they're appropriate for very young kids. I'd probably let them read the first few books at 6 or 7, and the last few at 9 or 10.

(I, by the way, adore the Harry Potter series and have been reading them since I was 12 or 13, not long after the first book was published, but before the second one.)

doesn't that just fuel the fire, telling someone they can't read something?

is it true in america they burnt the books sayin they taught children to be witches or wizards
13 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 3/21/06 - 3:32:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah. An old friend of mine that used to be a hell raiser is now a PW family man and his kids that aren't allowed to see movies or read books that aren't Veggie Tales.

It wouldn't shock me one bit if that was a fact.

I'm surprised that you have a computer. Bet you can't explain how it works... That's cuz it's magic! Sinner!

Yes, the year the first book came out, I wasn't allowed to read it when around my "father". Luckily, I haven't seen him since, so he really doesn't have any say in the matter.

My mum was really against the Harry Potter series at first because it had magic in it ( :s its FICTION for goodness sake lol) but once she'd actually read one she was fine about it
13 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 6/22/06 - 10:31:49 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, I had a substitute in the fifth grade that was a Christian extremitist and she wouldn't let her kids OR us read harry potter. She should've been fired, she was preaching to us and forbidding us to read books such as Harry Potter.. How dumb.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 7/25/06 - 6:26:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not personally, no. I didn't even hear of people not letting their kids read/watch them at church. The youth pastor's wife loved them, I think that's why I got on with her so well.
