I don't think that "The right to not be called a bitch" is a standard human right.

But don't you find it just a little bit odd to hate something you know almost nothing about.

I know alot, actually. Apparently because it deals with "witchcraft".

There is a certain distinction between what has been called witchcraft in the real world and magic in fantasy literature.

Human rights? Don't make me laugh.

I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with them. That's why I put witchcraft in quotations.

I know a couple. The strangest one is a family who are members at my church. They absolutely REFUSE to allow their 3 children to watch or read Harry Potter, because it's 'witchcraft', etc. The problem is, they let they're oldest daughter get absolutely obsessed with Willow, which ALSO deals with witchcraft and wizardry. Fun times.

One of my friends at school can't read them because her mom says it has witchcraft in it.

My dad did, but I still read all 5 books published at the time. One day, he decided to read the series (for whatever reason I don't know...) and it took him two weeks to finish 6 books.

No I can't say that I do.

Actually, yes. But the movie, not the book.

Why would any parent discourage their child from reading?!
Harry Potter is brilliant for children & adults. It helps with there reading, spelling and with their imagination.
There is a reason why people are turning into mindless yokels.

My aunt won't let her kids read Harry Potter....not for the whole witchcraft thing I guess
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Sunday 12/4/05 - 12:33:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, one of my good friends can't---she is uber crazy like that.
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Sunday 12/4/05 - 12:35:48 PM EST (GMT-5)

Yeah I had a few friends whos parents forbid them to read harry potter because it was "against their religion"

it is ridiculous.

14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Sunday 12/4/05 - 12:52:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, not really.

However, I've forbidden myself from seeing any more of the movies, and I've instructed my parents to help me enforce that policy. Obviously, this isn't for any religious reason related to this question, but I really despise those movies...

14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Sunday 12/4/05 - 1:08:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, but I know someone who doesn't let her kids watch the Simpsons for some reason.
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Sunday 12/4/05 - 1:12:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
Actually, I know ONE person who wasn't allowed to buy the books, but she got them from the library and didn't let her mother know about it.

It's one of the most idiotic things to ban a kid from.

14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 12/6/05 - 12:29:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes - I know several Christian families who do not allow their children to even talk about it because it deals with magic and 'witchcraft', and apparently it's evil. Which is ridiculous.

I think she means JK Rowling uses myths like the Philosopher's Stone. Big deal, quit acting like the books are a plague on literature

My mum has forbidden me from reading/watching HP. Even if she didn't forbid me I wouldn't read/watch that crap anyway. I don't like witch craft and wizardry and God knows what else that HP contains.
