Concert-goers jam exits after anti-Bush display

Incensed fans walked out of Pearl Jam's concert Tuesday after lead singer Eddie Vedder impaled a mask of President Bush on a microphone stand, then slammed it to the stage.

Most of Vedder's antiwar remarks earlier in the Pepsi Center show were greeted with mixed cheers and scattered boos. But dozens of angry fans walked out during the encore because of the macabre display with the Bush mask, which he wore for the song Bushleaguer, a Bush- taunting song from the band's latest album, Riot Act.

'When he was sharing his political views in a fairly benign manner - supporting our troops, opposing policy - that's OK,' said Keith Zimmerman, of Denver.

'When he takes what looks like the head of George Bush on a stick, then throws it to the stage and stomps on it, that's just unacceptable. I love Pearl Jam, but that was just way over the edge. We literally got up and left.'

Others joined Zimmerman, some complaining about the lyrics of Bushleaguer, which in part call Bush 'a confidence man' and say, 'He's not a leader / he's a Texas leaguer.' Question Who's Online | Find Members | Private Messages

If I was into Pearl Jam, I wouldn't be there for their political messages to the crowd, just to hear good music.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 4/13/03 - 4:10:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
and i would cheer too..
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 4/13/03 - 4:13:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd probably go to it just to see that.

Pearl Jam hasn't been relavant in years. I wouldn't waste my time. Go ahead and cheer, it's the liberal thing to do. Liberals thrive on poverty and oppression. The more poor and suffering in the world, the better for you.

I like to think we are trying to decrease the poverty, oppression and suffering. You can't really do that with a Bush in Washington.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 4/15/03 - 11:52:22 AM EST (GMT-5)
Hell no. If I paid that much money to see anyone, I'm sure as hell gonna stick through it no matter what they do or insult.

17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 9:19:54 AM EST (GMT-5)
No...I went to see them around election time, and Eddie Vedder did a long 'presentation' that was anti-Bush and anti-Gore as well. It didn't detract from the quality of the music.

the gene pool needs some serious cleansing.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 3:09:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
yeah I'd leave. If they put me in a bad mood right off I can't enjoy the rest of the show. Espicially if I never know when they might have another outburst.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 7:57:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
I hate the fact that everyone is sooo into Bush right now just because of the war. It wasn't like this before the war. Or maybe it was 9/11. You know if it wasn't for our government's attrocities against the other countries it wouldn't have even happened. For example did you know that our country poisoned Iraq in 91 and poisoned hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children. But of course they don't show this stuff on the news. I hate the phrase you're either with us or against us, are we really terroists of we don't support everything our government does 100%? Oh wait, our government are the terroists, what else would you call it? As a Christian, I know that the Bible says that we should follow man's laws, but He also says only if they agree with God's laws and I just can't see Jesus killing children. Yeah, and George Bush is supposed to be a Christian, yeah right.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 7:58:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
Iraq's water supply was poisoned that is. sorry
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 8:00:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
ash, if you're looking, you'll find plenty of folks on here that aren't "sooo into Bush right now." I don't think he's any more or less popular than he was before the war, or 9/11 either, for that matter.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 5/4/03 - 11:10:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Some people actually go to concerts to hear music, not political debates. Pearl Jam should come to YT to argue about that stuff.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 5/12/03 - 6:46:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
If Pearl Jam, or any one else for that matter, wants to bitch about the Pres, thats their right, and I wouldn't leave because they were expessing their opinion. They just need to remember that our Government, while lousy in some areas, is what gives us the right to bad mouth the Pres and his actions. In many other countries, they would have been asassinated before they made it through their first song.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 5/13/03 - 1:07:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't care for Pearl Jam
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 5/13/03 - 5:44:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
Firstly, seeing Pearl Jam would make me very happy. Secondly if they said anti-bush stuff i'd be even happier.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 5/13/03 - 11:37:32 AM EST (GMT-5)
gee. i would never leave a pearl jam concert.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 5/13/03 - 11:38:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't be at a pearl jam concert I'm not stuck in the early 90's I've moved on.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 5/13/03 - 1:01:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't go to see Pearl Jam anyway. If another band that I liked did an anti-Blair demonstration, I'd be leading the cheering.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 5/13/03 - 1:19:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
Assuming I would go to a Pearl Jam concert in the first place, I would probably be angry and leave if they spent more time bashing Bush (or just about any other politician) than performing the music I am paying to hear.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 5/25/03 - 10:24:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would stay.
