not really a religion as such- religion implies that it is just a set of rituals we do to try and prevent God's wrath, etc... but christianity is much more than that, for to me at least, it is a friendship where i can talk to God and i hear from him, so calling it a "religion" is not doing it justice!
It still bothers you, doesn't it, w8in? For all our discussions about how you are a hypocrite for complaining about a freakin' church having the audacity to display a sign in its yard, then turning around here and bashing faith with no intellect or tact, you continue to do it. If I said, "You are going to Hell," which I never have said, you would be the first one to cry about how unfair it is for me to say it, yet you have no problem doing it yourself. Tit for tat, son. I can throw out pointless cheapshots about your sham of a marriage as well as you can throw them out about religion.
The difference is that I don't discuss religion unless someone confronts me with it. I don't go out on the streets and express my atheism, nor am I trying to convince religious persons that they should not believe.
I discuss religion here because it is brought up in this forum. Haven't I already explained this over and over ?
I've had it with you and your holier-than-thou attitude. I can stand the lame stings you try to give me about my marriage. Or the allegation that I post messages without intellect and tact. However, I will not let you call my marriage a sham. You have no ground for judging my marriage. You don't know me or my wife, let alone how our marriage works (and believe me, it DOES work).
You try to look like such a wise and reasonable man, yet at too many occasions I have seen your childish attitude. You're what I would call a bad loser. Or, maybe even more appropriate : you're just a loser.
"It's a hoax indeed, like all religions." Disrespectful, inflammatory, no intellect, no tact, no provocation, nothing. Basically, a worthless and pointless statement which inspired one from me. You didn't like it? You didn't like the way it felt. Stop feeling it then.
For my own peace of mind, I will say that I have absolutely no opinion on your marriage other than that it is an arrangement I would not be happy with myself. Calling it a sham, or warning you to look for a Christian reading over your shoulder, is a direct response to your callous tone about religion. Hey, take it as a compliment that I apparently think it is worth my time to chide you about it when I simply roll my eyes at so many Eurotrash teens who do the same thing.
i'd have to say both..just depending on which way you look at it..
i'm not a member of any church but i do believe in the lord jesus christ..whether others choose to define me as a christian or not is entirely up to them and irrelevant to me..
There is nothing disrespectful about saying all religions are a hoax. It's just dismissing religion.
If you say "God has a great plan", you are just as "guilty" of dismissing my lack of belief.
Do you want me to say "I don't believe in it but if other people do, they have every right to" ? I can, because actually that's exactly how I look at it.
But letting people believe what they believe in does not necessarily mean I can't have an opinion on it.
I think churches are great for the people who find pleasure and strength in it...they're just not for me. I think it is based on a load of stories, assumptions, interpretations and attempts to bend people's minds by frightening them. If you want to belong to that, be my guest..I won't stop you.
But I will question everything. I have questioned religion over and over...and I believe it's a hoax. Just like you believe God exists.
It's a conclusion, not a low-blow swing at it.
it is disrespectful saying that all religions are a hoax - it shows both disreprespect for their culture and it puts yourself on a high ground that you are not as gullible as those that believe.
but to answer the question posed by Lynn, it depends upon your faith and your convictions.
Saying "I don't believe in any religion" is a lot different than calling them all hoaxes. Similarly, me saying that I could not envision my marriage without sharing something as important as faith would be a lot more acceptable than calling yours a sham. We've discussed this before. You agreed with me and apologized. But if you don't change, we'll have to continue discussing it some more, and it is only your impatience with being expected to follow up on such changes that has you miffed with me now.
I look at it this way : if you want to send money to Nigeria because you have received an email saying someone needs the money right now and will reward you with more money than you put in, be my guest. Send the money...I don't have a problem with you doing that.
But I still think that email is a hoax and you're gullible.
Besides : saying "I don't believe in any religion" IS the same as calling them all hoaxes. If I wouldn't think something was a hoax, I would have some sort of belief in it. Doesn't that make sense to you ?
All atheists think religions are hoaxes, otherwise they wouldn't be atheists.
True..but I'm not going to cover all bases before I say what I want to say. We are only allowed a 1000 characters per post.
I don't expect you to explain why you are saying that "God has a plan for us all" everytime. I don't need to be reminded how you came to that conclusion, because I know how you did.
You know I don't believe, so I assumed you knew I thought it was a hoax.
Maybe we should ask buddy if he can make a macro-button that will paste the words " From where I'm coming from" in front of every sentence.
I am sorry, but I wouldn't call religion a deception for mockery or mischief nor a deceptive trick or story, nor a practical joke - all definitions of the word hoax.
and w8in, atheism is the absence of belief in the existence of gods. Atheists might assert that some or all gods do not or cannot exist, but that isn't a prerequisite for atheism and it shouldn't be assumed that any particular atheist does so. If you want to know if someone goes so far as to deny this, that, or any gods, then you will simply have to ask.
Also, atheism implies no further belief system - it implies no beliefs about politics, no philosophy, no beliefs about society, no beliefs about science, no beliefs about religion, or even that the person is irreligious (because some religions are atheistic). Atheists vary as much in their beliefs and attitudes as theists do. If you know that a person is an atheist, then you know that he or she lacks belief in gods - nothing more, nothing less -
Warning you may not like what i say...
Christianity is as bad as Nazis. IF you actually READ the bible, you would know that God hates humans, the only reason he shows any kind of remorce is because we slotterd his son on a cross. God holds grudges like no other.
And for just the record. The bible was translated from Latin. the frase of "walked on water" the word on, in, over, through, is all the same one word in Latin. Horribly translated. Plus, Jesus, and his so called believers...drank ALOT of wine. Hell, he could turn water InTO wine.
But yes, I think God Laughes at all of you for arguing over religion like calling a Tomato, TomOtto.
You are mixing a lot of different things up here, topcat. Any misconception you have of God as angry, mean, hateful, etc comes from the OT, predating Christianity. Christianity is all about forgiveness, not grudges. The Bible was written in Hebrew and Greek. It was later translated into Latin, and then into other languages. Most translations that I know of go back to the original Hebrew and Greek for their translation, not the intermediary Latin.
I'm not seeing any proof *you* have actually read the Bible, and I'll let you know before you bother responding: reading it with the intent of poking holes in it will be very productive, as anyone can pretty much warp its meaning into whatever they want. In order to understand as much of its true intent as humanly possible, you have to approach it with a willing and open heart, and couple your reading of it with a preyer-rich relationship with God.
