When your car gets broken into and your stereo gets ripped off, how come the police sometimes say that it was done by a professional? How do they know? What did the thief do, leave a business card reading `Dashboard Redesigned by Rocco`?

professionals will steal in a way that makes it known they are professionals, for example, if a lock is popped, it was probably a professional, if the glass ws broken, it was probably not a professional.......

This is a dumb question...most people don't have their cars broken into so how should we know? And it's not "how come", it's "why", dumbass!

When my car was last broken into, the police refused to come round. They said there was nothing they could do except give me a crime reference number, there was no chance of catching whoever did it and in future, I should invest in a removable CD player.

Very helpful, makes me glad I pay so much tax to these guys.

I liked Jack Dees comment.

'I had my car fitted with an immobilizer. A wonderful little device. What happens is, if someone tries to break in and steal my car, it cuts their f**king legs off.

Which I think is fair.'

years ago i had a ford taurus that got broken into twice. both times they were after my stereo.

the first was a kid who clearly had no idea what he was doing. he smashed the window with a brick, and was still dicking around trying to pry the stereo loose when the cops arrived. they chased him on foot about 6 blocks and caught him.

the second time it was a pro job. they popped the door lock completely out, removed the stereo and were probably there and gone in less than a minute.

When I had my Subaru, it was broken into by amateurs.

First, they tried to go between the top of the side window and door seal. Screwed up the window tint and seal. On both the front doors. And they couldn't open the door that way anyway, because on a Subaru the lock button is next to the door handle, on on the top of the door edge.

So, next they pulled out the back window with a crowbar. Smashed the window, screwed up the roof panel, and scratched up the rear guards and boot (trunk) lid.

Once inside the car, they stole about $2.65 in change. Didn't even try to take the radio.

I didn't even bother reporting it to the police. $500 for my excess, and insurance covered the rest. Except replacing the window tint.

I hate dumb theives.

If the car stinks like a bum it was not a professional. If it does not smell like a bum then it was a professional.

So it is kind of a business card.

This isn't really a yes or no question.

There was a story going around that somebody left a note on the dashboard of their car saying no radio inside.

Someone else smashed the window and added.... get one.

#135 (this number isn't on the list but should be and if it were, it'd say "what fcking mod approved THIS question?"). I'm beginning to see a trend that involves a golden key.

I would have to say that, yes, the thief did leave a business card.

That was the question, right?

Take it to Journals

Ha ha, this is hillarious. But I would agree, pros and amatuers do it differently. Pros go in for what they want and know how to get it and with precision. They don't break stuff and throw stuff because that takes time.

#16!

I can tell you the guy that tried to rip of my GF's stereo was no profi - he made a right royal mess of it, and ran off real fast when I caught him. How much is a flippin' tape deck in an '88 accord really worth anyway??
