they are trying to rehabilitate them usually, not scare/disgust them into not wanting to go back.. I'm not saying that it should be like a vacation, but it shouldn't be a place that could make you ill

I agree with HunnyBun. In the Phoenix, Arizona area the Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, created the cheapest jail possible consisting of tents, barely tolerable food, no activities in 110 degree heat. The latest crime stats for 2000 rank Arizona as having the highest overall crime rate, and Phoenix contains the bulk of the people in the state. I'd say a reasonable rehab oriented system works better than cheap and unusual punishment. God help you if you have a bench warrant in Phoenix. The county jail is truly ugly there. Sorry for the long post - this question really hit a nerve.

I love Sheriff Joe. If you end up in jail you deserve the worst. Jail is not supposed to be a nice place. It is a PUNISHMENT.

The death penalty is too good for so many of them. They should put the child molesters and serial killers in a cell with the biggest, craziest,meanest, horniest guy in there and let them live their life out as his "Bitch"!

Go to jail, directly to jail, do not pass go, and I hope you rot like you probably are making some poor innocent family do mentaly forthe rest of their lives.

well it depends really on wot the crime was. murder= let them be tortured in a really really hot room, wit more than 1 person in so they can smell eachothers b.o. but if its a little thing then have it just how it is now.

yes, unless it causes more agression, b/c that could be bad...but i don't think they should have advantages that some people who don't commit crimes can't even have

I don't think they should kill people, though. I think that they should let some people with the most creative ideas tourture the murduers for a small fee.

I don't think prison should be a nice place to be. It should be tough. But at the same time, you don't want it turning into a North Korean prison camp either.

Prison is not supposed to be a place to "rehabilitate" people. They've killed or something and will probably do it again. But in my sometimes crappy country I just found out the prisoners are allowed to freaking vote!?!!?! Is that not crap on a stick>? But maybe I heard wrong but it wouldn't be that big of a surprise, they have computer access and are allowed to watch tv and a whole bunch of other cràp. So much for punishment.

Yes, ideally prison should be a place where convicts are punished AND rehabilitated. Let's 86 the cable TV and Internet access and get these people learning trades and actively working while incarcerated. Anything they earn while behind bars should be given to their victims or put into the communities where they committed their crimes.

Prisons shouldn't promote cruel and unusual treatment, but they shouldn't be country clubs either.

Sure, they are serving time and it shouldn't be a luxury.
