no, because "You've" is a contraction or whatever that word is for "You Have" i think.. it's just using proper grammar i guess..

I have Compuserve and it does say "You Have Mail"

Yeah, rckstr, but that makes it "You have got mail" which IS wrong.

And you have to let up on these people. C++ was their native language.

but if they just said 'you've mail' that would sound weird.

it sounds better You've got mail

It isn't wrong in any way that I can see. Got is acceptable here. You have mail, and You've got mail are NOT statements identical in meaning. Got can mean to have something returned to you, a meaning not implicit in the word "have" used by itself. Secondly, got invokes a more conversational tone. "You have" can sound bland and coldly factual--certainly not what a consumer wants to hear when exploring the exciting prospects of the world of e-mail. Got sounds more friendly.

I don't think so. "Gotten" and "got" are both correct past participles of "get", although "gotten" is in wider use in America than, say, England, where "got" is more common.

"You've got" is colloquial and North American. It is generally considered acceptable when used informally but substandard in formal contexts. Apparently AOL wants to be folksy and user-friendly whereas CompuServe wants to be just a little more professional.

The problem with got and get is that it's vague, and it's awkward. Other than that, it's not horribly wrong, but it's not really correct either.

You've got mail is wordy. You have mail would be more sufficient.

It's just whatever whim people think of that they'll put in. As long as it sells, they don't care.

Yeah, sure, why not

I agree that this terminology is an attempt to be colloquial - kind of following the "Got Milk?" ads.
