Most fairy tales (the traditional type: Brothers Grimm, Mother Goose, etc.) are based on either real-life incidents or on folk lore. And most of them, in the original, are very gory, scary and not for kids at all!

There are many more tales that are not so well know because they do not have such appeal to children.
Before people could read storytellers passed on their tales from farm to farm and hamlet to hamlet. Most had a moral lesson in them.

The most basic "Fairy stories" were probably simple stories to teach Children survival. Like Old man Fire catching you if you jump into one.
