Creating what I'm against?

I ask you to expalain when I think you have some reason to know about it more than I do, kaneda. No, neon, because the nature of god is different than santa claus. Santa is a popular story. God is that which created life, however you want to think of that. If you believe that life was not actively created, that's a belief, too.

Perhaps it would also help to examine what a religion is. The Encyclopedia of Philosophy, in its article on Religion, lists some characteristics of religions. The more markers that are present in a belief system, the more "religious like" it is. Because it allows for broader grey areas in the concept of religion, I prefer this over more simplistic definitions we can find in basic dictionaries. Read the list and see how atheism fares : Belief in supernatural beings (gods). A distinction between sacred and profane objects. Ritual acts focused on sacred objects. A moral code believed to be sanctioned by the gods. Characteristically religious feelings (awe, sense of mystery, sense of guilt, adoration), which tend to be aroused in the presence of sacred objects and during the practice of ritual, and which are connected in idea with the gods. Prayer and other forms of communication with gods.

A world view, or a general picture of the world as a whole and the place of the individual therein. This picture contains some specification of an over-all purpose or point of the world and an indication of how the individual fits into it. A more or less total organization of one's life based on the world view. A social group bound together by the above. To try and claim that atheism is a religion requires, it should be pretty obvious from the above, a radical ad hoc redefinition in what it is that "being a religion" is supposed to mean, resulting in a radically equivocal use of the new term-- if atheism is a religion, then just what isn't a religion?
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:40:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
so my belief that my car will be able to take me home tonight is now a religion?
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:41:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
for an atheist, god didn't create life.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:42:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
for some atheists, Santa and God are the same. Made up stories in a way to control people.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:42:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
if atheism was put in 'other', there'd also be alot of disagreement..its just basically a very simple chart..! to have 'other' expanded would be funny because its supposed to be in the minority.. non-religious is just basically lack of belief like they ^^have stated, it fits perfectly well under the blue section.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:42:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
There is exactly one thing that defines a religion: An absolute belief about the origins of human life.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:42:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
Then those people don't understand what God is supposed to be.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:43:49 AM EST (GMT-5)
no rufio,no!! people don't want to read too much into charts, they just want to get a basic idea, albeit simple!
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:46:10 AM EST (GMT-5)
or, rufio, you are not open-minded enough to see that some people don't accept the possibility of a god. The broader, and more common, understanding of atheism among atheists is quite simply "not believing in any gods." No claims or denials are made - an atheist is just a person who does not happen to be a theist. Sometimes this broader understanding is called "weak" or "mplicit" atheism. Most good, complete dictionaries readily support this. There also exists a narrower sort of atheism, sometimes called "strong" or "explicit" atheism. With this type, the atheist explicitly denies the existence of any gods - making a strong claim which will deserve support at some point. Some atheists do this and others may do this with regards to certain specific gods but not with others. Thus, a person may lack belief in one god, but deny the existence of another god.

Wouldn't not believing in a god be either a claim (that there is no god) or a denial (that a god exists)? If one lacks belief in a god, don't they deny a god's existence?
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:52:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
ITS PURPLE again, your looking for valediction in the wrong place... I believe in myself, I am not a religion... would it be nice to have a 0.000005% slice on the pie chart? yes, it would be a nice ocean blue... but thats not the point, its a chart referring to established religions, not documenting the beliefs everyone has...
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:54:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
good point CD, either way, its not relevent to the chart, and either way I think we are wasting our time trying to reason with rufio...
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 9:55:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
no, Cowdung.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:10:48 AM EST (GMT-5)
If you want a chart for apathetic people, you can make one yourself, Lynn. I am, neon. Those people are atheists. If you don't believe in somehing because it doesn't make any sense to you, than that is a denial. If you simply don't know if it exists, or haven't thought about it, than you are agnostic. I'm not even sure what you're talking about, delmar. We're all talking about religion, you are talking about a goddamn chart.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:13:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
actually, its a god chart...
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:14:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
So Neon, you don't believe in my god, yet you don't deny that he exists? How can that be?
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:22:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
you went from bitching and whining about not being included in the f*ckin chart to bitching and whining about the ridiculous notion that atheism being a f*ckin religion. Well explain to me how a the belief in no god, constitutes it a religion, or better yet explain by which moral code or principle do ALL atheist believe in... OR you can just admit you are trying to validate your personal opinions by having them be categorized as religious beliefs...
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:24:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
you don't have to have faith in the existence of someone else's deity to respect the fact there is such a thing as religious and cultural diversity...
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:33:43 AM EST (GMT-5)
I was never talking about me, and I was never talking about being included in the damn chart. It is just mislabeled.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:34:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
And it's not a question of religious diversity.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/3/02 - 10:37:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
Just as not all Christians have the same moral codes or principles, just a belief that Jesus is God, Atheists have different moral codes and principles, but have the common belief that there is no god. I liked the chart.
