Everyone is a philosopher.

I think if you have the right Professor it can be a learning experience. After taking philosphy in college, I was able to conquer my fair of public speaking and argue my point. Maybe I'm just weird.

Philosophy exists in all cultures. All humans at a point of time wonder who they are, where they come from, and what will happen to them when they die. Though there are no certain answers to these questions, it does not make them a waste of time.

Time is better spent on more practical endeavors.

*for, i mean't for

not for long what? Surely not the bit about not knowing for long? Is someone on the verge of proving most philosphical questions beyond all doubt? Philosophy means 'love of knowledge' you would have to be a self-declared moron to have no interest. "Time is better spent on more practical endeavors." is what many people said about many branches of physics until space travel became practical and computers/modern medicine developed. How do we know what forms of knowledge are 'practical' and what are not if we never give them a chance?

i often wonder that! i used to love philosophy and still do to some extent, but then i wonder if i am wasting my time philosophising. am i actually coming up with any answers? not usually

Philosophy: is the glass half full or is the glass half empty? Well, the study of such important issues certainly will help you later in life as you apply these unique and insight gifts to your chosen vocation as a waiter / waitress, as in does the lady at table number three need more water in her glass.

It isn't if you are passionate about it.

You don't show that much interest in it...
Few days ago:
You - So, do you study all the famous philosophers in philosophy?
Me - ... Yeh.
You - Cool.
I didn't actually catch the passion for any area or philosopher in particular.

I can think of so many more wasteful things.

At first, I always think that people are joking when I see them say things like this. It takes a while to realize that people actually very sadly think in that way. Or not really think at all in any way.

Ugh. "Practical" people.

Most things are a waste of time. One could even say that EVERYTHING is a waste of time, but then we'd be philosophizing, wouldn't we?
14 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Sunday 7/16/06 - 4:48:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't really understand why someone might consider the pursuit of understanding and knowledge - and, more fundamentally, training oneself to analyse and think rationally - to be a waste of time except insofar as they don't actually know what philosophy is. It seems quite common to consider philosophy to be the posing of some conundrum as if the conundrum itself has something to say, and then calling it a day. That, of course, is aside from the various instances of applied philosophy.
14 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 9/11/06 - 6:19:00 AM EST (GMT-5)
No it isn't. Philosophy is fun.

Like science? I hope that's not what you mean because Classical Philosophy was the forerunner of modern science.

You cannot deny the 'practicalities' of Philosophy, although I hate that word.

14 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 9/11/06 - 8:41:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
It has its limits, so if you don't respect those limits, yes, you've wasted that additional time. There's a time for the theoretical ponderings of philosophy, and then there's a time to make a decision or choice and act upon it.
14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 10/30/06 - 7:44:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, because people like to have reasons for doing certain things and to wonder about certain things. This "useless" pondering on life makes us human.
14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 11/24/06 - 11:34:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't find practical philosophy to be a waste of time but I do find the kind of philosophy taught in school to be a waste of my time.

I'm actually in a philosophy class right now but if I could make the decision again I would most definately not take it over. I find the class to be a waste of my time and money. The professor doesn't teach us anything, and I have found no reason to believe that he ever will.

I suppose that I cannot make some people think the same of me when I tell them that I have no interest in philosophy than what they thought of me before I told them, but at least I know that I am being honest with myself.
Uck to philosophy.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 5/6/07 - 12:15:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
Ironically, trying to work out an answer to this question involves philosophizing.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Wednesday 5/9/07 - 7:45:41 PM EST (GMT-5)

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 5/11/07 - 7:57:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
