Lots of people think it's caning in the S&M way of caning, not so.
This is a real piece of cane, wielded with both hands like a club. It tends to be bloody and really rip up the offender.
Based on that knowlege, I think it's a great idea. Not really for littering, but when that progresses to illegal dumping, sure. It's a little much for someone dropping a piece of paper.

With that in mind, Caning is a bad idea. Totally humiliating and inhumane. However Canning them might be fun.

Personally, I think it's kind of a good idea. I'm sure it's a lot cleaner there, with no one wanting to risk a beating by flicking their cigarette butts on the ground. I think it's a deterrent, because there's no, oh, I'm going to go to court and then I'm going to appeal my decision, and then I'm going to appeal it again for 15 years before I ever even see the cane...it's just done and that's it. I just get really sick of all the crime here and the disrespect people have for others and others' property. Some people should just be beaten.

I don't really think punishments should be physically brutal. I am however in favor of public humiliation. The stockade and scarlet letters and whatnot seem like very good deterrents to me, I think the whole world should know that you got caught doing something wrong and chastize you for your misbehavior.

this all goes back to the key question: do the ends justify the means? Are we willing to harm people for the sake of deterring them? Even if we aren't sure it WILL deter them, and there's no way of knowing if they would have done it again anyway?

'kepi' There are a number of objectives attempted by criminal punishment: deterence, rehabilitation, retribution and remuneration to list the ones that come to mind. The point is that deterence is something we attempt without sacrificing what we consider our civility. In El Salvador a drunk driving conviction carries a manadtory sentence of execution, needless to say they have a much lower rate of drunk driving than we do, detterence is possible.

it sounds like a good idea to me. also, they should go back to public hangings in front of the court house for murderers. the only excuse for killing someone is self defense.

I live in singapore, and have live here for 2 and a half years. Why are you so upset about some stupid american kid getting smacked a few times for vandalism. There are so many Americans here who think they are above the Singaporeans, and they dont have to follow the same rules as they do. Its time for americans to pull their heads out of their arses and realise that their not better than the rest of us.
PS: why do you care about the canning? they hang someone everyday in the gaols here.
