If by starve you mean literally STARVE, then obviously I would rather live than die in my paid-for apartment.

I think you're not thinking of "literally starve" but rather "starve to death"

oh, FTR i'd bounce the check.

I once fasted for 18 days - water only.

I can live off the "fat of the land" for quite a while.

Holy crap! What made you decide to do that?

As for the question, I'd definitely pay the rent. I don't see how the food I already have in this hypothetical couldn't last me two weeks. There's too many negative consequences in bouncing the rent check, whereas the meager food pickin's only affects me.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:06:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't actually bounce the check. I'd just not pay rent (A one-time late rent payment isn't as bad as that plus bouncing a check.). Eviction takes months, and landlords are much more forgiving than my two-weeks empty stomach.

Truth be known, I don't really remember anymore.

I know I had a friend who was really in favor of fasting and encouraged me to do so, but for exactly what reason I started fasting...I don't remember.

haha, wow. Well that takes perseverance, good on ya.
Now I want to try it.
Just to see if I can.

It's easier than you'd think, HR. If you can get through about the first two days, you almost don't feel hungry anymore.
I've done 10 days before, but in retrospect, I was a super-cranky bitch...so I'd still rather be late on rent than possibly have my attitude negatively affect other parts of my life (like work).
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:19:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
we have the resources necessary to hunt our own food, so i would make sure our family wouldn't have to worry about starving.

Makes sense, but those first two days must be harder than quitting cigs.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:33:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
I've fasted for spiritual purposes, but that's w/ purpose and an end in sight. I don't know what it's like to be hungry for any extended period of time w/o some reassurance that there will eventually be food again. I know that in the Nazi concentration camps (Oh, no! I lost the thread!) Jews beat family members to death over scraps of food, so the limits of hunger...
But ultimately I suspect it's easier to come by charity food than charity rent/mortgage payment.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:40:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
^^^ Well, I certainly knew that food was available whenever I chose to eat, which probably makes it easier.

I also suspect that you're right about it being easier to come by charity food than charity rent.

On the other hand, the equation would change substancially if the question were about paying the rent or my children going hungry.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:40:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Those are both the worst possible decisions for this problem. Why would I choose that?

Yes! I was running out of room, but wanted to include that, too.

i read that someone tried the exact same thing for about the same amount of time and was near death.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:48:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
Depends on how much fat you start out with, I suppose.

I was very weak and tired at the end, but healthy enough. I revived to normal after a day or two of eating. (During fasting, your body slows down to protect itself - it doesn't know when food will become available, even if your mind knows food is available at any moment you choose.)
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:51:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
If I decide to fast just for the hell of it, I'd go 7 days. I don't want to accidentally kill myself or anything
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:56:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think you'd notice before you got anywhere near death.

Only if you're fasting for a particular reason that causes you to be unwilling to stop fasting (ie, Gandhi fasting for an end of hostilities, or an anorexic person) are you likely to reach a dangerous level of fasting.

Although I suppose fasting because you can't afford to buy food could get you to that dangerous level.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:57:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
"...fasting because you can't afford to buy food..."
I wouldn't call that "fasting." That's just starving.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 6:59:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
OK, I'll go with that.

Well, fasting because you paid rent instead of bought food (but know you'd be able to buy food in 2 weeks) is not quite starving, I'd think.

But, I also have to assume that if you're treading that close to the line when it comes to making monthly expenses, you probably weren't eating that great to start with. So you might not have a lot of fat/necessary nutrients built up in that case.
8 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/24/11 - 7:07:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Nah, I just mean that "fasting" serves some other purpose and is a choice, not something foisted upon you...

Honestly... my last post and this one were pretty unnecessary and pedantic. If this were a face-to-face conversation they'd have been asides that could have been squeezed in easily enough, but they just haven't been worth the time it has taken to type them.

Carry on...
