You want to be patriotic. Dissent, that is patriotism, at least it used to be this country. What Bush wants is Facism. I say forget the yellow ribbons. Buy a real bumper sticker, "Suppourt Our Troops, Bring Them Home!"

Good point. I don't know if you said it exactly right though.

Only questioning our leaders and our government can we truly make sure our country keeps it's greatness or becomes great, so in turn if you do that, you are a patriot. Nothing against agreeing with your government, but to blindly agree is where you become much different from a patriot.

I wish our country was more patriotic... its sad that our country only becomes friendly in devestating times like 911

I'd like to take that eagle and suffocate it with that flag then burn the whole sorry mess.

If all men are born equal then there shouldn't be a reason to shout for your country louder than others.

Patriotism makes me sick, especially when americans are being patriotic. It's like a delinquent being proud of not being able to read.

I think patriotic just means you're brainwashed (how can you be patiotic in a country that promotes war for oil, practices torture on prisoners of war, still has the death penalty, and robs the poor to feed the rich??)

My grandparents, all of them, came to this country to escape the sh-it heap they were in in other countries..........I have a better life because of it, and Im proud of how this country let me be.......my grandparents came with no experience, and worked their way up well enough.
Plus, I know people who were in the military, and Im joining at 18.

Oh golly ... pride in your country .. how horrible

^^^ Nice sarcasm Daydreaming. You are starting to sound like one of the sheep SomedaySoon was talking about.

The "patriotism" we have seen post 9-11, for the most part, is not real patriotism. There is a lot more to being a patriot than waving a chintzy plastic flag and agreeing with everything your government says. Real patriots are able to recognize our country's faults as well as its accomplishments. A parent who never told their children to "knock it off" or "Stop doing that" when they were doing something wrong wouldn't really love them, would they?

I am also pissed off that this psuedo "Patriotism" has become synonymous with a willful ignorance of the rest of the world and thinly veiled racism and homophobia against one's countrymen. I am angered that anyone should even have to be reminded that you don't have to love the president to love the country.

Just because I don't agree with the majority in these forums doesn't make me a "sheep." I never said I followed everything the country does...but I still have pride in my country...despite it's huge screw-ups. Kind of like a mother with a child who just always seems to make poor decisions.

Yes.......

And those who say that it is unpatriotic to criticize the president were the same people who bashed Bill Clinton during wartime and sexually degraded his wife and daughter on a daily basis.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but some people just need to wake up, smell the coffee, and get your collective penis out of the radical religious right's collective mouth.

BTW Daydreaming, I definitely see what you are saying. I will always love my country despite its faults. However I resent that it was implied that people who don't agree with bush and run around with flags don't love the USA.

I think there's a bit of a gap here between definitions of patriotism.

It becomes a question of whether patriotism is some kind of specific definition or if one can define patriotism more loosely (similar to the way Christianity is defined — some denominations choose to disqualify others as Christian even though they both believe Jesus Christ is the son of God, etc etc)

I see nothing wrong with loving one's country. However, as lushus pointed out, there becomes a problem when patriotism means a sheep mentality and those not following are branded traitorous (such as was done during the Iraq war as some rightist pointed to dissenters as traitors).

Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Patriotism has taken on a new meaning: if you're from a different country, you get beaten up.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 6/22/05 - 11:39:13 AM EST (GMT-5)
It seems like today patriotism means hating the French, supporting Bush in everything he says and does, hanging cheap flags on the windows of our cars, and believing we should go to war with any and every country that doesn't believe in "our" policies. That's just my opinion, anyway.
