JoeInterview's Member Feature

This week's interview features Blueandgray. This interview was conducted by travbowman, holly_bolly, and JayY.

JoeInterview: First off how did you find your way to the joy that is YouThink?

Blueandgray: Simple. I was bored one day and then I decided to visit bored.com as I usually did at the time. There I saw a question hosted on Youthink, thought it was interesting, and answered it.

JI: And what would you say is the biggest reason you keep coming back for more?

BandG: I have learned so many things thanks to Youthink. In fact, I have Youthink to thank for my high self-esteem and never ending hunger for learning. There's just so many interesting people on this site as well, and so many intellectual conversations. There's really not much more I could ask for.

JI: Whose posts would you say really gets your mind working?

BandG: Hmmm... a fair bit of people on this site, actually. Kungfullama always gets me thinking, especially when its one of those rare occasions where I disagree with him. He always has some sort of constructive input.

Floor_Demon really gets me thinking. He seems to know everything about the subject he's talking about. Whenever he posts, its always miles long and totally shows how much he knows. It makes me wonder how long it takes to acquire such knowledge.

Cryndigo also makes me wonder. A few years ago on another screenname, I always saw her posting. I always thought of her as being incredibly serious. Now after about 6 months of being away from the site, she always seems so sarcastic and she cracks me up.

Then all the alters make me wonder as well. Especially those "specialized" ones like Ultraliberal and the funny ones like Pyramid_Head... my personal favorite.

JI: So you're coming up on 18 next year; any plans for your life as an adult?

BandG: School, mostly. I started schooling late so I'm only going to be a junior in high school. However, I definitely plan on learning to drive since I'll FINALLY be able to drive where I live. I can finally go drive insanely fast on the autobahn. I'm also old enough to drink hard liquor at 18, but that's not really too alluring. I also need a job, but that's kind of hard. I plan to take a class senior year where they just give me a job. Yay.

JI: So what brought you to Germany?

BandG: The military. My dad enlisted and served in Vietnam and eventually ended up in Germany after marrying my mom in Korea. I guess my dad eventually retired while in Germany and got a job working for the Army so we aren't required to move as often active military folks are. I've been going to school on the same Army base in the same city my whole life, and that won't change until I finally head off for college in the US.

JI: What colleges are you considering attending?

BandG: Ugh. That's a really tough question. I've been considering lots, but I'm still not determined on any of them. I already have a safety school ready, which is Toledo University in Ohio. It accepts literally anyone who applies. My sister wants me to go to Dartmouth, but I doubt I have the grades for it to be honest.

I definitely plan to go to college near the mountains, though. I absolutely have to be able to snowboard. I haven't done much college searching yet, actually... though I'm coming up on junior year, so its about time I start. I'm pretty determined on becoming a dentist. That's some yummy monies right there.

JI: Toledo's decent and all, but not exactly near any decent snowboarding.

BandG: Haha, yeah. The only reason Toledo is my safety school is because I would get in-state tuition and I'd be able to hang out with my relatives a lot. I'd just have to suffer greatly on the whole snowboarding deal.

JI: What sort of music has been getting the most spin from you lately?

BandG: Well I recently started a thread in the music forum asking for punk rock recommendations. I've definitely been getting really into that stuff. I also am in love with psychobilly. Its great. A really great band I managed to find is "Tsunami Bomb." Yay.

I've also been on the lookout for lots of British indie rock and ska bands. Once I'm satisfied with the punk I have I'll definitely set priority on my search for ska. I'll probably even start a whole 'nother thread for ska in the music forum. I can't wait.

I also recently found out about "avant-garde" metal. I'm not completely sure what its supposed to sound like, but apparently bands like Stolen Babies and Unexpect-- are supposed to be avant-garde. Those bands are great and I'm definitely on the lookout for some more stuff like that.

JI: Do you play any instruments yourself?

BandG: I'm kind of able to play piano. I've been taking lessons for a long time, but I've never really practiced... so I kind of suck horribly as a result. Once I get back to Germany after this vacation I plan to finally start seriously practicing the piano. I got inspired from the movie Orphan. Which is odd.. because there's about 5 seconds of piano playing in it. And its a "horror" movie.

The main reason I never practice is because my piano is in a very uncomfortable part of the house. Its just not a very cozy place and I want to feel right while I play piano. If I had a keyboard or something in my room I'd be practicing constantly, I guarantee it. Then I'd be the virtuoso that I should be now...

JI: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

BandG: Either still in college or fresh out of it. I have 2 years left of high school, and then I have 8 years of college planned. Hopefully I'll be figuring out where I'm going to have my dental practice... near mountains, of course. I hope to live somewhere awesome like Vermont, but nearly anywhere in New England would be incredible. I'll also be in a huge amount of debt because of student loans and the fact that I promised my sister and her friends free porcelain veneers doesn't help much.

JI: Whose sense of humour gets you to laugh every time you read/watch/hear it?

BandG: I've always been a huge Kyle Cease fan. He's always so sarcastic and just says the oddest things. He has the perfect voice for what he does, I think. I'd compare him to Dane Cook, even though I'm not a giant Dane Cook fan, myself. Unfortunately he only has one act and he quit comedy. Its a sad day for Kyle Cease enthusiasts everywhere. I also like Eddie Izzard and Jim Gaffigan.

JI: What is your most prized possession and why?

BandG: Really tough question. I probably would've answered iPod a few weeks ago, but it recently broke because someone left it outside in the rain for an entire night. I was pretty pissed, and now I have nothing to watch on the f*cking plane rides on my way back to Germany.

I'll probably go with my desktop computer, then. Actually, I think I love my computer more than I loved my iPod. It plays games like a real beauty. I can pump everything up on the highest graphical settings and it still runs beautifully. Yeah, my computer is definitely the love of my life.

Is this bad?

JI: What games are getting the most of your time lately?

BandG: Absolutely none, actually. Since I'm on vacation I haven't had much time to play video games. Its very unfortunate. I've been occupying up my free time by reading and just generally searching for new music to fill my future mp3 player.

A few days before I left for vacation I got The Sims 3, so I plan to play the sh*t out of that game when I finally get back home. I also bought Skies of Arcadia for the Gamecube while here, so I'm definitely going to be playing that a whole lot at home. I'm not really looking forward to hooking up my old Gamecube, though.

I'm also looking forward to playing Mount & Blade. The game doesn't get enough attention for how incredible it is.

JI: What have you enjoyed most about your vacation so far?

BandG: I've had the most fun just kind of hanging out with my two cousins. They're both only a year older than me so we have a lot we can do together. We've mostly just been kind of playing video games, going to concerts, and playing basketball. Its been lots of fun... too bad I have to leave in about a week.

I'm also very happy that I've been able to visit my sister and two nieces who live in New York. I never see them anymore since they moved from Germany about 2 years ago. I also had lots of fun when we went to Cedar Point. Nothing in Europe compares to that park!

JI: Nothing in the world compares to Cedar Point! What was your favourite ride?

BandG: WHY, IT WAS THE MILLENIUM FORCE, OF COURSE! I was lucky enough to get in line right before it got dark, so after about an hour of waiting it was completely dark out when I rode The Millenium Force. I never had more fun on any ride I've ever been on in my entire life. I've even been on the Millenium Force once before, but it was during the day. It was especially fun because I got my sister on it. She's deathly afraid of big drops... and The Millenium Force is the mother of big drops.

I also had lots of fun on the Power Tower. We rode the one that shot up in the air 4 times since the line was so short. Another favorite will always be the "new" coaster, The Maverick. So intense! I also had cheese on a stick for the first time in my life. It was delicious at first, but then it was way too much.

And I can't forget about the Rip Cord! And people say Ohio is no fun.

JI: If you could meet any 3 YTers and go anywhere with them, who would you meet and where?

BandG: That's a really tough question. Especially since I'm not really that involved with Youthink. Mostly I just get online and post around in questions and sometimes in music and games. From what I can tell, most people meet each other by interacting in journals. I've been planning on trying to get posting in journals, but I'm on vacation and don't really have much time to spend on Youthink.

I'd like to meet YTers that are my age who not complete idiots and/or douchebags, obviously. If I could meet YTers with an interest in snowboarding or skiing, that'd be great! It'd be awesome to go to the mountains someplace and just ride. Maybe some YTers who know their way around the mountains in the US, since the only mountains I know are in the Alps, and I hear skiing/snowboarding in the US is a way different experience.

JI: So you're into snowboarding, what do you enjoy most about it?

BandG: Another toughie. One thing I've always enjoyed was riding with some friends and just searching for jumps. Nothing beats finally finding a really great jump and just hitting it over and over again.

Seriously. It sounds lame, but its an accomplishment. I also like to just hit the real jumps at a park or something. One thing I'm gonna have to start working on at the parks is grinding some rails and stuff. I've only tried it twice.. with horribly disastrous results.

My favorite part of the snowboarding day would be the end, though. Heading down the entire mountain is tons of fun. Its usually insanely long (depending on the mountain), a black run (the highest difficulty), and I always usually end up racing with all my buddies. Its a huge rush. I'm not a big fan of moguls, though. I kinda wish they never existed.

JI: What's your favourite soccer team to watch?

BandG: My favorite soccer team? I haven't watched club soccer in a long time, but I usually like watching Premier League. I don't often care who wins the matches, but its great fun to watch. Some favorites to watch are the big teams, of course. Teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

I'm big on World Cups, though. I'm incredibly excited for the one NEXT YEAR. Oh my God, its ONLY ONE YEAR AWAY. I've got like 4 teams that I want to support, but I want Korea Republic or Germany to win the most. I'm rooting for Korea Republic since I am half Korean, but I also want Germany to win because I live there... and because I doubt highly that Korea will win the cup.

JI: Do you have a parting shot to share with your fellow YTers?

BandG: This site has changed me a whole lot, and in a good way. It just makes me want to be involved with the community here even more. That's my new goal. To be more active on other forums besides questions, games, and music.
