JoeInterview's Member Feature
This week's interview features holly_bolly. This interview was conducted by travbowman.
JoeInterview: First off how did you find your way to the joy that is YouThink?
holly_bolly: Just like most other people, I was extremely bored and decided to type 'Bored' into Google. Alas i-am-bored popped up, and I think, being a n00b at the time, I completed a fascinating 'Would I date you?' quiz. Being thrilled at the results. I decided to take a few more quizzes, and the rest is history...
JI: And what would you say is the biggest reason you keep coming back for more?
H_B: I can't say I'm emotionally invested in anyone here, but I do enjoy hearing little snippets of everyone's lives, whether they be good or bad. I think having been around for a while, I like to follow people's stories. But I also keep coming back to find the occassional interesting debate or discussion that I can put my two cents in (and sometimes more!).
Oh and to see my name mentioned in the favourite YTer threads, but doesn't everyone else do that too?
JI: You're about a month away from your 18th birthday. Any special plans?
H_B: Well I'm not a big partier, so for my 18th I am just planning on going out to dinner with some friends and family. I'm a deplorable teenager. However... I am excited about ordering my first cocktail! I have my eye on a chocolate one!
JI: What are you studying at Uni?
H_B: I'm studying psychology at the moment, and loving it. I knew my brain would turn to moosh if I didn't continue my studies after high school, so I thought I'd enrol straight away. The only thing holding me back was finances, but fortunately I was granted a all expenses paid scholarship for my course, so that really encouraged me!
I love delving deep into social practices and child development, as well as having some studies to back up why I think my family is genuinely insane! The research is amazing and I couldn't ask for better teachers, so I'm quite lucky really.
JI: What do you see yourself doing as a career?
H_B: I'm not really sure. I keep going back and forth between criminologist and developmental psychologist. I guess I will pursue the one most suited to my needs and lifestyle. The future is very uncertain for me at the moment. I'm just enjoying the ride. Wow, how very cliche!
JI: How have you changed the most in your 4+ years on YT?
H_B: I don't even know where to begin with that question. When I first joined, I was the epitomy of a noob, although I did resist the urge to post dodgy pictures of myself and declare that I was BFFs with every other noob on the site! But in terms of personal growth, it has been substantial. I've grown up a lot and have realised the importance of some things over others. And without sounding too corny, I can definately say that YT played (and is still playing) an important role. I can come here to vent, to catch up with friends, to get advice, and to sometimes be abused. All in good fun of course.
Hopefully I will change even more in the years to come!
JI: What sort of music has been getting the most spin from you lately?
H_B: I'm always embarrassed to admit my taste in music as it always results in the same 'eeew really?' reaction. My taste is a mixture of 80's and 90's pop, with a dash of mainstream 00's. Tunes like George Michael, John Farnham, The Eurythmics, Cyndi Lauper, The Spice Girls and more recently singers like Pink, Britney Spears, The Black Eyed Peas and the PussyCat Dolls (even I'm ashamed to admit that).
I've tried them and found that I don't like most of the underground undiscovered bands. I'm happy with anything that has a pop beat and a predictable melody. I'm quite easy to please. As long as I know the words and can dance along, I'm happy. It's my escape where I don't have to think about anything!
JI: What was the Pink concert like?
H_B: Excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Although it was a bit short (only 90mins long), she had great lights and dancers and acrobatics. I was also pleasently surprised with hter impressive vocals. I presumed that she would be one of those computer-generated pop stars, but she had a beautiful voice. I went with my best friend so we made a night of it with fluro pink clothes and pink wigs!
JI: Who outside of family has had the biggest influence on your life so far?
H_B: That's a tough one. Outside my family, I'd probably have to say my high school ancient history teacher. I felt completely comfortable talking candidly with him about all sorts of things. He had achived so much in his life that I eventually want to do (he worked with uncivilised tribes in Africa and interviewed some of the most infamous criminals of our time).
It sounds soppy and corny but he inspired me to work hard to get what I want, and given my circumstances, that was some of the best advice I'd ever been given.
JI: What circumstances were those?
H_B: Well my disability makes many future careers unrealistic, so I had to find something that I enjoyed, but also something that I could succeed in without my disability stopping me. I was considering archeaology or working in the police force, but obviously both of those options are very physical!
So I've settled for psychology, where I can give my brain a work out instead!
JI: Can you describe your physical disability in more detail for the YTers who don't know?
H_B: I'm happy to explain it, as I much prefer that people (on the internet as well as in real life) know the truth rather than assume. I have Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, which basically means all my muscles below the neck slowly deteriorate over time, resulting in weakness. It's an unpredicatble progression and there is nothing you can do to stop or slow down the process.
At the moment I find it hard to walk without aid and usually just use a wheelchair. It's a generally crappy situation, but others have it much worse, so I try to suck it up and make the most of what I've got. It's not my favourite subject to talk about, but I'm happy to answer any questions. As I said before, I'd rather people be open and honest with me, rather than assume.
JI: At what age were you diagnosed?
H_B: I've had trouble with walking, running and strength all my life, but my parents just thought I was lazy! I'd come home from school exhausted and in tears because kids used to tease me a lot, and they'd say 'Toughen up!'.
Of course they feel horrible now that they know all that time I had a horrible debilitating disease But I didn't hold it against them as neither of us knew what was going on until I went to my GP and she immediately said I need to go to hospital to run some tests. This was when I was about 12. And the rest is history!
JI: If you could meet any three YTers anywhere you wanted, where would it be and who would be there?
H_B: Hmmm that's a tough one. It would have to be Hael, pinkconverse and Sa-Chan, and it would be in New York, because I've always wanted to go there and I reckon we would have a blast.
Hael would inform me all about his ideas for a robot future, Pink would just abuse me and make sexual innuendos all day and Sa would be just as sweet and great as she usually is!
JI: Whose sense of humour can get you to laugh any time you read/hear/watch it?
H_B: I'm a massive fan of comedy festivals and live shows and try to get to them as often as possible. My favourites would have to be Arj Barker, Stephen K Amos and Ross Noble. They make me laugh every time I see them. Their quick thinking and ross Noble's vivid imagination has me in tears of laughter sometimes.
JI: What's the best thing about being Australian?
H_B: Ahhh where do I start? I honestly think I live in the best place in the world. And am very lucky to live in such a wonderful place.
The obvious perks like the weather and the landscape are a given, but the people here are so laid back and easy to get along with. There are many great opportunities here with regards to education in terms of easy access to most universities.
Also the culture is amazing. The history and stories behind some of Australia's most famous landmarks (such as Uluru) hold great importance to the original inhabitants of the land, the Aboriginals.
I really couldn't ask to live in a better place. But the best thing about Australia is our rugby union team. GO WALLABIES!
JI: And what do you complain the most about where you live?
H_B: This is a hard one. I can't pick many faults with where I live. I suppose the one complaint I could have is the lack of night life. There aren't many nice places to go and have a drink or just hang out at night. Everything tends to shut early and there aren't many places to choose from.
But other than that. I can't complain!
JI: What's your most prized possession and why?
H_B: Well it's not one thing, it's quite a few. When I travelled around Europe, I bought a gold charm from every country I went to, so from then on, I've collected them for special occassions like birthdays and special gifts.
They all mean something different to me, and I wear a different one everyday to remind me of when I went up the Eiffel Tower or when I ate lasagne in Italy. So, my gold charms are my most prized possession. I love them, they all have stories behind them.
JI: What was your favourite place to see in Europe?
H_B: My favourite place in Europe was definately France. I've had a life long fascination with the beautiful country and it was literally a dream come true to finally visit. I had my 15th birthday up the Eiffel Tower and snacked on frog's legs and snails for dinner! I was one of the best (if not the best) experiences in my life. The art, history, the museums, the food, the people, it was all gorgeous.
I would go again in a heartbeat if I could.
JI: Do you have a parting shot to share with your fellow YTers?
H_B: Always be a step ahead, like a carpenter making stairs.
