JoeInterview's Member Feature

This week's interview features Kodama. This interview was conducted by travbowman.

JoeInterview: First off, how did you find YT?

Kodama: It was ages ago, ala August 2001. I believe it was through the I am bored website. Had a job with very little to do, and no actual human contact, so when I found this place it was like a gold mine. It was like a small close knit family back then, I was hooked.

JI: Any particular reason that you gave up the le37 name?

K: Change of scenery perhaps, le37 will forever be around tho. Mainly however due to an ex of mine who would call me up long after we parted ways and question me about things. No need for such aggravation. And kodama is fun. Gives something entertaining for people to look up.

JI: Are you generally interested in Japanese folklore, or just particularly fascinated by kodama?

K: I'm a fan of folklore in general, not just one type. Kodama share a special spot however, being a minor character in one my my favorite movies Princess Mononoke. Spirits of all sorts i've always had a huge intrest in. I think I just like the idea of the unknown, forever reading about what most consider paranormal.

JI: How have you changed the most in your 8-ish years on YT?

K: Just my outlook on life i'd bet. At the time I was 18, just getting into the "real world". Thought I knew what it had in store for me. Man was I wrong. My views on almost everything have changed, and so has my direction. Grown up alot perhaps, for the better, I was an idiot.

JI: Was your medical condition the biggest factor in forcing you to grow up quickly?

K: Very much so, I went from being an almost carefree teen, to needing to be a pillar for everyone around me, along with myself. Everyone was so worried for and about me, I had to find a way to put on a brave face so they could do it, and so I could too. After a while, it stuck. And to this day, I wouldn't change a thing.

JI: Can you give a glimpse as to what it's like to be facing brain surgery?

K: It's a very strange mix of emotion. At least it was for me. On one end, the typical fear, tho for me that fear only lasted a day or so. At the polar end, it was almost a relief. I'd spent many months very sick, and this was my shot to live a normal life again. While everyone around me worried, I rejoiced at just the IDEA of being ok. I wasn't willing to give into the depression that people fall prey to. For me, it was nothing but up from where I was.

JI: What are your long term goals?

K: The typical american dream i'd guess. Going to school and getting a Masters. Finding a job I enjoy, and I can take pride in. Meeting someone to share life with, and starting a family, and enjoying the ride along the way. In an ideal world anyway.

JI: What would be your dream job?

K: I've always wanted to be two things since I was a kid, a pilot, and an intelligence agent. The first i'll never see due to medical issues, the second however I will. Excited that one day i'll actually make a dream come true, and a large one at that.

JI: What sort of music is getting the most spin from you lately?

K: As of late it's a toss up. An equal mix of old punk, and a new arrival in alot of bluegrass types. How it works, I have no idea, but i'm a big fan.

JI: Whose sense of humour can get you to laugh every time you read/hear/watch it?

K: Brian Regan, Has me dying everytime I hear his stuff. Also the tried and true George Carlin. Brilliant!

JI: Who outside of family has had the biggest influence on your life?

K: My best friend hands down. She challenges me everyday to do more and push myself, and find what makes me happy. Without her, i'd settle. She isn't willing to let me do that, and for that i'll forever be greatful. It's what I need.

JI: What's the best way to spend a weekend?

K: As of late, i've been spending most of mine on the rivers nearby. Either on a tube, or in a kayak, drifting down river with a cooler full of beer, nice weather, and good company. It doesn't get much better. Wish it could be this way year round.

JI: What's your beer of choice when floating on the river?

K: So many to choose, oh man. With friends, I stick to the normal Miller lite and such, tho Red Stripe or Newcastle Brown do make apperances quite often. I'd stick with Newcastle all the time tho, if given the choice.

JI: Describe the world of Mixed Martial Arts to the uninitiated.

K: It's amazing, plain and simple. People trained in multiple forms of hand to hand combat. Almost along the lines of gladiatorial combat. Locked in a cage together, may the better person win. Ending by KO, TKO, or submission. It's like a human chess match. Not for the feint of heart, but for those who can stomach it, few things make for a more exciting night. And the discipline and respect is a sight to behold. If once a fan of any kind of competitive combat like boxing or karate, one should totally check out MMA.

JI: Who is your favourite UFC fighter right now?

K: Hard to say, for stand up, i'm a huge fan of Rampage Jackson, he is also one hell of a character, tho I wish he would get back to his roots and not be just a boxer, he is better than that. For everything else, I like Lyoto Machida. He makes very very few mistakes, and is such an enigma. Watching him fight is like watching him create a masterpeice, it doesn't get old.

JI: What is your most prized possession and why?

K: Sadly, it's probably a stuffed animal, little foot, from when I was a kid. It was always a comfort thing for me when things got crazy, to the point where I couldn't sleep if it wasn't nearby. To this day I still have it, and back up's incase something were to happen to the original. I'm so getting clowned for this answer...

JI: What's a hidden talent of yours that few YTers know about?

K: I have no idea, perhaps that no matter what one can do to a computer/printer/other device I can probably fix it, and trim their trees after doing so. Or that i'm a sponge for useless trivia.

JI: Do you do well playing trivia games?

K: Indeed, between bar trivia and jeopardy, I usually do fairly well. Now if only I could find a way to make that useful.

JI: If you could meet any three YTers anywhere you wanted, where would you go and who would be there?

K: Other than the ones i've already met? This is rough. I'd probably want to sit at a pub on the beach somewhere. Good brew with good scenery, it wouldn't get much better, as to those to join me, I think it would be people i've talked little with, but find fascinating. EhFahq/Xpaper being one, yes one. Also halzberry would be damn entertaining i'd imagine. The last spot a toss up between Mr. Bungle and Mr Pink. I'd imagine a get together of those sorts would be a freaking trip.

JI: If Buddy sold YT to you for a dollar, what'd be the first thing you'd change?

K: I haven't a clue. Seems like things have slowed way down these days which saddens me. It's no longer the close knit community it once was. I'd try to bring back that feel above all else. The place where threads would go on for days or weeks at a time, and have civil conversations inside. Without breaking down into all the pointless BS that infests us these days. All the *insert latest fad here" names and obsessions, gone! To hold on to the past seems dumb, but man, it couldn't be beat back in the day.

And i'd bring back the alter checker, that thing was money for the few days we could all play with it. Good times.

JI: What've been your favourite alters to grace YT's presence over the years?

K: Fonzborg...! To be honest, i've never really kept up with who is who and what is what. So i'm way out of date on alters and such, or if people in general are real. I miss the days of aprily and jjason82's antics tho I must admit. Watching people melt down over heresay is ALWAYS entertaining.

JI: Any final words of wisdom to share with your fellow YTers?

K: Follow ones dreams, big and small, for the journey there may be more fun than the dream itself, and if not, it's one hell of a story.
