Joke of the Week

Parachute Jumping

On the first day of training for parachute jumping, a blonde listened intently to the instructor. He told them to start preparing for landing when they are at 300 feet.

The blonde asked, "How am I supposed to know when I'm at 300 feet?"

"That's a good question. When you get to 300 feet, you can recognize the faces of people on the ground."

After pondering his answer, she asked, "What happens if there's no one there I know?"

JoeInterview's Member Feature

This week's interview features luckystar107. This interview was conducted by travbowman.

JoeInterview: First off, how did you find YT?

luckystar107: I think it was personality quizzes that brought me here. I used to be addicted to them and would google them to no end. The ones here were slightly lame, but the rest of the website was intriguing.

JI: What would you say is the biggest reason you keep coming back for more?

LS107: Before it used to be the Questions forum, but that's died down for me as of late. I'm particularly interested in News and Generals, and when there's some interesting thread, Lit and Old School. But I have to say I've gotten wonderful private messages in the past and also present ( hopefully to continue in the future) and that's really why I keep coming back here.

JI: You list sewing and knitting as interests in your profile. Are you sure you're not 91 instead of 19?

LS107: Everyone says that! I know, I have old lady interests. But they are fun, I swear! I think they allow me to be creative when I'm only borderline artistic in other areas.

JI: Does working at a movie store give you the chance to see movies that you normally wouldn't have watched?

LS107: Oh, definitely. I see a lot of movies I would have never even heard of otherwise. We don't get a lot of smaller, independent, or foreign movies out in theatres here, so actually knowing each movie that is released on dvd at our store really helps in that area. Plus, I can watch as many as I like and it's easy on the bank account.

JI: What's the best thing you've seen on DVD in the past year?

LS107: Ooh, tough one. That's really hard to say... I see a lot of movies! In Bruges was hilarious. I didn't have high expectations going into it, but I really found it to be great. You can't really go wrong with Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson, after all. The Darjeeling Limited was also quite engaging and quirky. It had a nice blend of comedy and drama, and the best part: Adrian Brody. Into the Wild was also a good one; very touching.

I know I'll be kicking myself for missing something I obviously adored. This happens all the time at work when people ask me what's good. (I'm Not There! I knew I missed a good one!)

JI: What's the best thing about living in BC?

LS107: I would have to say the duality of the province- the urban and the wilderness. I feel like I'm really close to everything that I love to do, whether it is in nature or in the city. Kayaking, museums, hiking, beaches, rafting, shopping, arts, whatever. It's all a bus, sky train or ferry away, which is really nice as a student who doesn't necessarily have a considerable amount of funds or time.

British Columbia is beautiful. Vancouver and Victoria have a really nice atmosphere to them and I feel really at home in both places. Also, the old growth forests are something to see. If people are interested in hiking, nature, that sort of thing then I would definitely recommend checking some parks out... especially before what we have left is depleted or destroyed.

JI: What's the biggest disadvantage to where you live?

LS107: I think I just have the usual complaints. The provincial politicians are shifty and corrupt. Our public transit needs an overhaul. They are spending money on the 2010 Olympics instead of looking at what really needs to be fixed, such as our homelessness problem.

I used to really want to move from BC when I was younger and go abroad, but I have to admit I've realized my love and couldn't imagine leaving forever now.

JI: Are you looking forward to having the Olympics there next year?

LS107: Not in the least. I think Romola Garai sums up my thoughts on the Olympics pretty well: "I do think the Olympics are a curiously male obsession. Who can run the fastest from here to here? You know what I think? Who gives? Because if you're not running to catch a bus or running to buy me a bunch of flowers, I don't care."

If I choose to watch the Olympics it will be on television like any other year, not in person. So really it will be like it's not here at all, except for the traffic and the fact that I'll be paying off the bill for the next forty years. Preferably I won't be here at all, however... a vacation would be nice!

JI: Where do you see yourself in ten years?

LS107: In ten years I'll be twenty nine years old. I have a terrible sense of time and I'm sure life will not turn out how I expect it in the least, so mostly I just hope to be happy. I imagine if things keep going the way they are and I don't have a dramatic change of heart... I'll be finished my teaching degree, perhaps working on my masters in my spare time. Optimistically, I'll have a job that I quite enjoy and will be out of this town. I'd like to be married and have a family too. And a big furry dog.

JI: Have you ever had a big furry dog? If so, what was he/she like?

LS107: I've only had miniature pinschers myself. They are neither big nor furry. But I grew up with dobermans who fulfil the big quota. Mandy and Max were the sweetest dogs I've ever laid eyes on. Children can be a little rough on dogs, me being no exception. I remember sitting on them (pretending to ride) and the dogs still having no care in the world...

JI: Where would you like to travel that you've never been?

LS107: I haven't been most places, but India has topped my list of places to visit for some time now. I want to explore all the temples and market places and museums. The scenery looks so gorgeous and the culture is fascinating.

I don't think there's a place I wouldn't visit given the opportunity though. That GAPadventures site always has me salivating over their wonderful trips.

JI: What are you most looking forward to in 09?

LS107: Disneyland! I swear, this is the year I actually go. Though I've been saying that for years. Everyone and their mum has gone here, it's my turn! But other than that, just spending time with family and friends and doing my own thing.

JI: You recently passed your 4 year YT anniversary. How have you changed the most in that time?

LS107: Well gosh, I was fifteen and in high school when I started coming here. Now I've graduated, am in university, and am turning twenty in a few months, which is scary in itself. I don't really think I've changed that much to be honest, other than the normal growing up stuff. I'm happier and more comfortable with myself which I think is the most important change.

JI: What subject are you hoping to teach?

LS107: I want to teach elementary school, the primary grades. So that involves a little bit of everything. In school though I'm focusing on English and History, so if I want to branch out I can. If I decide I want teach the middle years or high school I'll still be able to go that direction.

JI: What's the story behind your username?

LS107: Basically, I'm not creative. My Nana has called me her lucky star forever. And she calls my sister her sun and my brother her moon. So when I signed up here, that was all I could think of. The numbers have no significance other than me liking them.

JI: That's too cute. Will your future kids be her starlets?

LS107: Hehe, I guess so! She is going to be an awesome great-grandmother!

JI: What sort of music has been getting the most spin from you lately?

LS107: Mostly the same old, same old. The Beatles, Weezer, Regina Spektor, Coldplay, The Flaming Lips, Bob Dylan...I'm totally in love with She and Him at the moment though. I currently have "You Really Got a Hold on Me" on repeat.

JI: What's the best thing you've read for pleasure recently?

LS107: My classes at school have been kicking my butt in the reading department and I haven't really read anything for pleasure recently. The last thing I did read was Maya Angelou's Letter to My Daughter, which I did enjoy thoroughly. It was a really quick read (I was given and finished it on Christmas Day), but the stories were filled with such wisdom and warmth and humour that I couldn't put it down.

JI: What's the hardest course you're currently taking?

LS107: American Literature, for sure. The sheer number of works we're expected to read and know inside-out is a tad overwhelming. My teacher has great expectations for what my class be able to accomplish in this course, but we're already behind schedule. I'm horrible with leaving things to the last minute, so with that class it doesn't bode well. At the moment I'm actually starting an essay due next class on Bradstreet's poetry!

JI: Has procrastination always been a weakness of yours?

LS107: I used to be as good as gold about assignments in high school. But I had a slacker friend and that stuff is contagious. Now I just can't break the habit.

JI: Let's say you get to meet any three YTers anywhere you want. Where is it and who is there?

LS107: First, the people. StubbyTorso2 would have to be there because I know we'd absolutely hit it off. She seems like a lot of fun. Abzurd, too, would be another I'd love to meet. He seems to have such good taste in things I have a feeling I'd come away with a million things I'd have to see and read. Last, but not least, Anthropology. The more I talk to her the more I think she's wonderful.

As for where, I think a nice cozy café would suit me. With brownies and hot chocolate. That's where I'd like to be right now, actually...

JI: Whose humour when you read it/ watch it/hear it gets you laughing every time?

LS107: Certain things never fail... The Princess Bride. Arrested Development. Doing the crossword and seeing the wrong answers that I come up with. I'm also blessed with lovingly hilarious people in my life. One look from a few of them can make me laugh so much my stomach hurts and I have to wipe tears off my cheeks

JI: Why do you think that Arrested Development failed to find a large audience, despite being one of the funniest shows on tv?

LS107: Arg, I don't know! It's one of the most hilarious shows I've ever seen and with such a great cast. Maybe some people don't like the humour? I guess it might not appeal to the reality TV crowd or something...

JI: Any final words of wisdom to share with your fellow YTers?

LS107: Anything I try to come up with for final words sounds contrived and cliché. Peace and love.

Excerpt: Ignite was wandering from town to town as he normally did. He had no home, he didn't need one. The world is huge, why retrain yourself to a few acres? Still, every once in a while he would think back to his old village where he was raised.
