Funniest Comments of the Week

In a thread titled 'Elephant beats heroin habit':
die_numb: I practically cried just reading the title of this thread. How can someone be so soulless as to abuse an animal, in any way, shape, or form? Animals feel things just like humans do, and especially in the case of elephants, they never forget.

Random thread:
hannah_h: I lost my virginity on Jesus's resurrection day.
thh: So Jesus wasn't the only thing that rose that day, huh?

Random thread:
Raisinman: I just heard on the radio today that 93% of blacks said they would vote for obama.
thh: Is this from the same statistical poll place that found out about teens and abercrombie and fitch?

Random thread:
redreine: "If it exists, there is porn of it" I found that out two nights ago. When the boy informed that there is, in fact, Lisa Simpson porn.
Kungfullama: Lots of it, actually. The more obscure stuff is harder to find. Like Mythbusters porn. Now there's something you can never unsee.
Kungfullama: "The more obscure stuff is harder to find. " God, I'm a genius. You can just ignore that sentence.

In a Hurricane Gustav thread:
ichabod00x: It was category 5 on yahoo this morning.
w8in: It was 4 on Google. And there were a million more search results than on Yahoo.
Courtbebe: But what does the reporter in the thick of it think?
w8in: He probably still checks Altavista.

Joke of the Week

"Everything Is Ours"

A business man and his wife are at a party, and having a conversation with another couple-a bank manager and his wife.

The business man is bragging about his belongings- "Me and my wife went in my car to my beach house last weekend."

The wife, annoyed, says, "Honey-don't talk like that. Those things aren't YOURS, they're OURS. Say, 'WE went to OUR beach house in OUR car."

The businessman smirks, turns to his wife, and says, "Okay, honey. Just thought I'd let you know that we got our secretary pregnant."

JoeInterview's Member Feature

This week's interview features immortal_1. This interview was conducted by travbowman.

JoeInterview: First off, how did you find YT?

immortal_1: Through Skittlekitty and Pink_Fairy. We were in the high school library, and apparently they were bored. I remember coming up and asking them what they were looking at, and well now I'm here.

I didn't actually make an account until about a year after I first found YT. I didn't actually realize that you could! Another friend, Frogleg, told me that I could make an account and actually save the jokes to my favorites. Yes, I came here for the jokes. And yes there used to be good ones once upon a time.

JI: What's the biggest reason you keep coming back for more?

i_1: I have a few good friends here now. Bobfudge springs to mind, as well as Jeni_s and those on my buddy list who are still around. I also like to catch up with the few IRL friends on here that I pretty much don't see anywhere else. In fact, I found out Skittle was pregnant a second time through YT. The news also keeps me coming back. YT is pretty much my news source, unless I want something local. I find it's better than regular media because I get commentary that I actually enjoy reading.

I just thoroughly love the whole YT experience! Buddy should market it as a virtual holiday for those who love to argue. Plus, I like the Secret Santa.

JI: What was the best secret santa gift you've received in an exchange through YT?

i_1: Well I've only participated three times. The first time I was stiffed, but it was more than made up for the second and third times. I got a sweet prism the second time although I don't remember who sent it, and I got a few nick nacks the third time from Krymson which were pretty cool. Also, since the names were messed up last year I ended up getting another present from Freakychick after she was banned. It was a t-shirt with trailer trash smurfs on the front.

So to answer the question, my favorite was the prism. It's hanging in my window still.

JI: You list your occupation as "Lots of things". Care to elaborate on a few of them?

i_1: I only have one job, I just put that there because I could. I work at a small railroad station here in Durango, CO. It's the major tourist attraction for the area. My job is officially warehouse crewleader, which means I get to boss around about six other people when they decide to show up. We load the trains in the morning with the souvenirs and food for the concessionaires to sell. I also order all the food, and just generally keep the warehouse looking spotless. I'm also a concessionaire every once in a while too. That just means that instead of loading the train I'm supposed to try and unload the souvenirs on the tourists that ride. It also means that I get to ride the train! I'm a bit of a train enthusiast, which in railroad lingo is called a foamer.

I also work in the gift shops selling more souvenirs, clothing, and coffee. In other words, I'm just a tourism whore.

JI: In what locale have you most enjoyed being the tourist?

i_1: I don't ever like being the tourist but my best experience with being on the other side of the counter would have to be in LA at the huge farmers market, in Santa Monica I think. My mother used to live out there so whenever my sister and I would visit she would always take us to the market and let us just wander around for hours. The only purchase I ever came away with though was a black incense holder that I used every day in high school, but use it mainly as a decoration piece now.

Another fun time was visiting the zoo in Denver. I was going through the monkey house and this funny little monkey with a ginormous mustache followed me all the way, just making faces. He reminded me of my grandpa.

JI: What's the story behind your username?

i_1: Well I was trying to think of something that I would remember and at the time I thought pretty highly of myself, so of course immortal popped into my head. Unfortunately for me it was already taken, so I just added the _1 as an afterthought. I still long for the immortal without the _1 though, so buddy, if you read this, pleasePLEASE can I have it? The dude hasn't been on in almost 1000 days.

I've tried to make the switch to an alter, FoolsConvert, a couple of times but I can never make myself stay away from immortal_1 for more than a week. Nostalgia I guess. Plus most of the people with whom I interact know me by this username. I'm not like Kaned... oh sorry... Isthiezak....

JI: You mention in a recent journal having interviewed at a college. What are you hoping to study?

i_1: My major of choice is Environmental Studies, although I don't have enough credits to transfer directly to the department. Unlike most college students though, I know what I want to do with my degree. I plan on getting certified as an architect and build sustainable housing while doing my bit to help the environment.

JI: What is the biggest atrocity concerning the environment right now in your opinion?

i_1: It's a local issue, but the Desert Rock Power Plant really has many people here up in arms. I'm not going to give a full blown argument as to why I think it sucks right now, because we wouldn't get done by the time the newsletter is supposed to be ready. Suffice it to say, that we don't need more power plants here to supply power to the suburbs of Phoenix or LA.

JI: What sort of music is getting the most spin from you these days?

i_1: The song I've listened to most over the past week has been a cover by Quietdrive of Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time. I just love that song. Also, Toni Price has been getting a lot of air time with me. Her voice just melts me.

I'm also going through some of my old PMs and rediscovering a lot of music that was sent my way by Bamagitarman. Now that guy has awesome taste. So, you know, if anyone wants to PM me with their fav songs or just random ones, well go for it! I love listening to pretty much any song at least once. Maybe it'll end up being a new favorite of mine.

JI: You list yourself as a Star Trek fan in your profile, which begs the ultimate question: Kirk or Picard as captain of your Starship?

i_1: That's a no brainer for me. I grew up with TNG so of course it 's Picard. The man is amazing, except when he sang the ABC's for Sesame Street. That was just scary.

JI: Why do you think Star Trek appeals to so many generations and such a diverse group of fans over the different series?

i_1: Honestly, they just have great storylines. I haven't watched much of TOS because it never really caught my interest. I guess I'm just too enthralled by the ones that were made after I was born, aside from DS9. Hah. TNG, Voyager, and Enterprise are my favorites, in that order.

I think the series all capture such diverse generational groups because they have storylines that relate to everyone at some time or another. What is there that Star Trek hasn't explored? It's not just technical, but also human, and as Data says we're "trying to become more human." Also, they have some pretty good writers and decent budgets. And that's about as deep as I get when it comes to television series. Even my favorite ones.

JI: Whose posts (outside of your buddy list) do you enjoy reading the most?

i_1: I like to read Trips and Harold when I venture into News. They always have some interesting point or argument that I can usually agree with. Also, anyone who argues in one of the many religious threads just makes my day, I can just sit back and lol.

Flovebunny and Shak are two I'm starting to see around a whole lot more than I did. Maybe it's because I'm getting on at different times. Flove makes questions enjoyable again not just because she's a mod who knows how to spell, but because she also has some decent answers. Shak just makes me laugh all the time no matter what thread she's in. I saw today that she typed out the theme songs of two shows in the "TV shows summed up in one or two sentences" thread in TV. It was gold. Others would include Kyry, floordemon, brunnen, and anyone in gossip who isn't on my list.

JI: Describe the gossip thread to the uninitiated.

i_1: I see gossip primarily as a place where I can catch up with the Aussie/New Zealand YTers that I hardly see anywhere else. They seem to be the heart and soul of that thread. Poppin and Tama, Sammy and Kio, they're always there making some snide comment or actually talking about something worthwhile. I love seeing the pictures Kio takes, and hearing about everyone's different trips. Even SDave is civil there, but that's because of his wife who also posts there when she's not busy with the kiddos.

Gossip is pretty laid back. I've noticed lately that those who I first remember posting there, don't post quite as often. It's been an influx of newer posters who have enlivened the thread. Riggar, Holly, and others really have made it worth keeping around. I know others see it like the GMYT threads that used to abound in journals, ie. just a bunch of spam, but it's really not. Sure it's more frivolous but it's also one of the more frequented threads in OS. I've always wondered how many people actually look in that thread every day.

JI: What was the last good book that you read?

i_1: Islandia by Austin Tappan Wright. It's about the first american consul to the nation of Islandia which is part of the Karian subcontinent in the southern hemisphere. It's not as technologically advanced as other nations and that's how the Islandians like it. The consul visits most of the country and falls in love with a native girl. But because Islandia is kind of xenophobic they only allow 100 non-natives into the country at a time and only allow them to stay for a certain amount of time. Basically the consul has to leave and realizes that if possible he would love to stay in this utopia that he has discovered.

Very good book. I would recommend it to anyone who likes utopian stories, fantasy, that sort of thing.

JI: Describe the utopian way for you to spend a weekend.

i_1: Actually this weekend is going to be about as utopian as it gets for me. I'll be climbing Redcloud and Sunshine mountains; two fourteeners just a few hours drive from where I live. I've only just started climbing fourteeners but I have climbed a few local smaller mountains before and I love hiking, so going higher was a natural progression for me. I enjoy being out in nature with a good friend, or by myself, getting out there and being closer to the mountains I love. Maybe by the time the newsletter comes out I'll have pictures from both of the trips I've done/will be doing over the last two weeks.

After climbing I like to curl up around a fire or in a comfy chair and read a good book, which I definitely plan on doing. Or maybe going to the local hot springs and relaxing while soaking in the view.

JI: Do you think you could live in an area that didn't have mountains nearby?

i_1: Absolutely not. It's not just the beauty of the mountains, I also feel at ease when I'm surrounded by them, or at least in view of them. To me it's a mindset. A way of understanding the world and where I am in relation to everything around me. Mountains humble you in a way that you could never get from fields, hills, or cities.

(In all honesty, I probably could live in a place without mountains but I wouldn't want to do so.)

JI: What is your most prized possession and why?

i_1: The letters that my grandmother writes me are very important to me because I know that one day those will be the only personal things of hers I will have. A little morbid, but I know she won't be here forever.

JI: What's one of you fondest memories of your grandmother?

i_1: When my cousins, sister, and I were young she was our babysitter. My cousins are mostly female, and being our grandmother she was very fond of cooking. She would gather us all in the kitchen and let us have free reign of her kitchen, mixing and baking, and generally creating a huge mess in her already cluttered home.

Being the inventive children we were, we called the concoctions we created "mixtures." My grandmother thought it was the best thing in the world to see us in the kitchen and being happy about it. It was always a great time.

One of those mixtures happened to be mint gum that my sister and a cousin thought up. They went out and picked some wild mint that grows in my grandmother's yard, and mixed it with flour, water, and shortening. Needless to say, my sister won't chew mint gum anymore.

JI: Haha..that's great. Have you improved on your cooking skills since then?

i_1: Oh yes. I am the resident cook whenever my friends and I all get together. I watch food network religiously, which sucks right now because I don't get that channel in my new apartment. Sadness. I cook almost all of my meals, and I love being in the kitchen. I was always the one cooking when I lived with my parents, too. Back then I'd cook/eat anything that was put in front of me, I wasn't too picky. Now that I'm on my own I like to think that I haven't become picky but more discerning of what I eat.

Baking is what I love doing most. Pies especially. I won best of fair in high school once for a strawberry rhubarb pie. I'd love to be a baker.

JI: Who is your favourite Food Network personality?

i_1: Either Ina Garten or Alton Brown. They both have recipes that I love to try and their shows are always fun to watch. I watch Alton's main show because he's always got such interesting tidbits. The only thing wrong with Ina is she uses so much salt. If I wanted that much salt I'd get a saltlick. So, I guess the winner is Alton.

JI: You get to invite any three YTers over for dinner. Who is coming, and what are you making for them?

i_1: Of course I'm inviting Bobfudge; she's just about the closest thing to a best friend I have on this site. Cindy, who was and still is one of my dear friends. She's also got some great pictures! Or at least she used to. Hah. I can't decide between Chips and Poppin so I'm bringing them both. They're both short enough, and female enough, that most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

We'll be eating cream of wild mushroom soup, I don't care if some of them don't like mushrooms. People should love mushrooms unless they're allergic. That's the only excuse that works when trying to get out of eating their deliciousness. For dessert we're having plum cake "tatin." Mmm, I love upside down cakes. And then we'll talk. Not sure what about.

JI: Any final words of wisdom to share with your fellow YTers?

i_1: Do today those things that can wait until tomorrow.

Learning about the human body
Excerpt: I've been thinking recently about my time spent in medical school. And while I usually like to think that my time there wasn't completely wasted, that at least I came away learning a few things, most of those things are useless trivia.
