Joke of the Week

Worms

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. Four worms were placed into four separate jars. The first worm was put into a container of alcohol. The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke. The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup. The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.

At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results: The first worm in alcohol - Dead. The second worm in cigarette smoke - Dead. Third worm in chocolate syrup - Dead. Fourth worm in good clean soil - Alive.

So the Minister asked the congregation "What can you learn from this demonstration?"

Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said, “As long as you drink, smoke, and eat chocolate, you won’t have worms!”

JoeInterview's Member Feature

This week's interview features KarenG29. This interview was conducted by chips2001 and travbowman.

JoeInterview: How did you find YT? Feel free to make up a tall tale, if the truth isn't that exciting!

KarenG29: To be honest, I think I just googled "bored" at work one day and this came up. At first I just answered the questions without commenting, since I didn't have to register (I think) but soon I registered and mainly posted in the music forum. My story isn't that exciting but I was hooked immediately.

JI: And what keeps you coming back for more?

KG29: The interesting people, the threads, I think it really is just you can say whatever you want or however you feel about anything. It's always nice to feel like someone is listening to you - even if they are faceless strangers that you've never met. It's also feels good to make friends based on the same interests and tastes.

JI: How are the wedding plans coming along? Is it a giant chore, or do you relish the chance to make the day as perfect as possible?

KG29: Well, actually I am not making any wedding plans...I WAS, my husband and I were married last June in Las Vegas. Now we're making baby plans! I found out I was pregnant on January 20th, and we go for our first doctor visit and sonogram on February 21st so I'll know exactly when the due date it.

Planning my wedding was great though since we did it in Vegas. It was easy - the chapel we chose had different packages with cake, pictures etc so we just chose the one that suited us best. The only typical thing about my wedding was choosing the wedding dress. We had no attendants but our families were there. It was an amazing experience. Getting married in Las Vegas was the best decision! There are some girls who totally get into the 'planning the perfect wedding thing'...I am just not one of them!

JI: Wowzers! 2008 has certainly begun in style for you! How did you meet your husband?

KG29: It's kind of cute - he went to high school and college with my brother in law and sister. She had always tried to "set us up" but we were so different and we really just out and out didn't like each other. As I went through boyfriend after boyfriend she kept pointing out "You haven't given HIM a shot yet, you'd be perfect together!" I wouldn't budge because I really didn't like this guy - I thought he was arrogant, a jerk and just not my type.

I saw him act in a play, this hilarious show with a few of his friends and that's when I started to see him in a different light. I developed this HUGE crush on him and of course he couldn't care less about me, but we became better friends. It took me asking him to a wedding of a mutual friend of ours for our "first date" - we bascially just laughed, got wasted and danced and have been together ever since!

At our wedding reception (a few months after we got back from Las Vegas at our favorite local restaurant) my sister toasted us. We had forgotten that at HER wedding, my husband was one of the groomsmen and I was the bridesmaid matched up with him to walk down the aisle and dance with at her reception. She proceeded to blow up a picture of the two of us, awkwardly walking down the aisle, for everyone to see. It was the best moment of the night.

JI: Does your husband have similar tastes in music to you?

KG29: Luckily, my husband loves the Beatles - not quite as much as I do - and has for years. We went to The Fest for Beatles Fans (yes, the actually have those!) in Las Vegas during our honeymoon and he didn't hate it! I was very happy - I have gone to a few of those and absolutely have a blast there and plan on going to many more!

He actually dislikes pop music very strongly - if I hear a great, catchy pop song even if it's on Top 40 radio I'm likely to buy it off of iTunes. You can't deny great songwriting even if it's just any old pop diva singing the song - chances are they don't write there own stuff. My husband likes a lot of folky, acoustic artists, like Damien Rice, Elliot Smith, etc. whereas I like more electric, rock n roll stuff.

He's not as passionate about music as whole as I am - I must have music everywhere - in the car, at work, at home at all times. I'm constantly asking him about new music, to listen to this new song and get his opinions. Sometimes he laughs (The Feeling) and sometimes he loves it (The Redwalls or The Kooks)

JI: Who/how was your musical taste formed?

KG29: When I was really young, I loved Madonna, Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul...whatever was on the radio. I also listened to a lot of my mom's favorite music, like Genesis, Robert Palmer, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton. My father's a musician so I've always had music in my life. I remember my first "real" music tastes on my own were Green Day and Oasis. Man I worshipped Oasis in high school...and then I discovered the Beatles and my whole world changed. I pretty much got into the typical classic rock bands of the 60s and 70s, and kind of abandoned the radio.

It's kind of embarrassing but I got a lot of exposure to music from ex-boyfriends. Tom Petty, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Muse - these are bands I adore now but might've ignored if I had not eagerly listened to them to impress a boy. I tend to go towards a lot of British bands; Oasis, Coldplay, Muse, The Who, Blur, The Feeling - I can't explain why. It's not like I don't like American groups...maybe it's the pop-ish quality I like. Maybe it's just better songwriting.

JI: Who do you take after more - your mum or your dad?

KG29: Probably my mother just because we're closer. My dad really instilled in me a great sense of what's good music-wise and has suggested some great bands for me to check out - like Ben Folds Five and Fountains of Wayne. My folks are divorced and remarried so I see my mom a lot more.

JI: What's it like, finding out you're going to have a baby?

KG29: It was quite a shock. My husband and I want kids, we just didn't plan on it being so soon! I had noticed I was late - I am never late - and immediately thought that's what it was. I took 6 tests and even had my husband take one to make sure. We were very unsure...we were planning another Las Vegas trip for the fall and were very gung-ho about travelling but finding this out has changed everything, of course.

Up until the ultrasound last week I was not excited about being pregnant. How some of these women can relish in being pregnant is beyond me. I just feel sick and tired all of the time and pretty much just not right. But after seeing the baby at the ultrasound, it changed everything. It was in there, wiggling around, we saw it's hands and fingers and it was just amazing. It really puts everything into a different perspective.

JI: What do you look forward to most?

KG29: Well I really look forward to not being pregnant anymore after it's born! But besides that I look forward to weird little things - like what the baby will look like, finally holding it, playing it Beatle songs in the nursery, and seeing the baby with it's dad. There's always a million things going through my head.

Mostly I really look forward to us being a family. Spending holidays together, going on trips together, going on outings and those kind of things. I never thought something so common as having a baby could make me so sentimental.

JI: You've been a YTer for a while now. How do you think you've changed in that time?

KG29: How have I changed on YT during my time here? Well I think when every starts an account here, to a point they want everyone to know who they are and what they think. I remember debating a lot more in my early days when there were good, thoughful debates. Nowadays, you're likely to get called a c*nt and are told to deal with it.

Pretty much these days I just log on to discuss the topics I like, give my opinions, and that's pretty much it. I don't try to get very involved in the cliques or make new friends...there are only maybe a dozen (at the most!) users that I care about their opinions or what is going on in their lives.

JI: Tell me about the spiritual side of KG29. I see you describe yourself as an atheist - but atheism is a broad umbrella. How did you come to your convictions?

KG29: Well it's pretty typical - I was raised Catholic and in high school just basically started asking a lot of questions. In my opinion, Catholicism is filled with hypocrisy and half-answered questions...and so many people out there don't put 100% into their faith like they say they do.

I'm not here to judge anyone and I think people should feel comfortable practicing whatever makes them happy. It's just that I can't put all of my faith into something that I don't know is out there. I know that's the definition of faith, maybe I just lack that capability.

I guess you could say I'm more agnostic than atheist - I just don't know but have serious doubts. But there wasn't one "moment" in my life where I decided to stop believing. I just kind of evolved to that mindset.

JI: Someone who has lived under a rock decides that they want to learn about the Beatles and they come to you for advice. What album do you start them with?

KG29: Oooo what a good question. I'd say Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, if they wanted to just get a general idea of their songwriting and musical talent. Maybe the White Album because that album is so varied.

I think inevitably serious Beatles fan start to wonder about their early work and influences. I'm kind of in that phase right now. I love hearing about their roots and what they listened to in their early 20's. Some of the greatest music of rock and roll history was available when they started the band. It's so interesting, to me it just makes the Beatles more accessible, like they didn't just come up with their incredible songs all on their own.

The very first song I heard by the Beatles (and was aware of it) was Sgt. Pepper. I was so intrigued - it was like nothing I'd ever heard before. If you listen to that song, or A Day in the Life, and aren't immediately curious, then the Beatles probably aren't for you.

JI: So you don't see their earlier stuff as just bubble-gum pop?

KG29: No, not at all. I happened to catch this one show on PBS, called "John Lennon's Jukebox" a while back...and it was the actual collection of rock and roll records John Lennon had when he was young. It featured the songwriters and artists who created these songs, and then the show would compare these songs to Beatle songs. You can actually hear how these early Beatle songs literally were based off early rock and roll songs.

They might sound like "pop music" now by today's standards, especially after electric guitar rockers like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin emerged, but in my mind, it's not bubble gum pop at all and never was.

American bubble gum pop of that time, in my mind, would be considered Peggy Lee or Neil Sedaka.

JI: Describe your hometown to us.

KG29: I live in a city in Kansas that is part of Kansas City, but is not called Kansas City. Does that make sense? Anyway, it was rated #6 in 2006 as one of the Best Places to Live in the US. It's safe, but crowded. There are lots of great restaurants close to home, with amazing shopping all over the place. I moved out here in 2002 from Kansas City, Missouri and would never go back. I think i live pretty close to Travbowman and Angi, but I'm not exactly sure where they live.

JI: Are there any cities you've visited that you'd love to live some day?

b>KG29: Las Vegas, hands down. I love that city. It's like being in another world - it's so addictive. It's not for everyone though...I love to gamble and see the sights there. I like that it's busy - there's always something going on no matter what time it is. It's the ultimate vacation for me. It seems like whenever I've gone to Vegas it's been sunny nonstop. I could absolutely see myself living there someday.

I would also LOVE to move to Philadelphia. I visited there right after high school and fell in love with it. People seemed so friendly there and the city was very clean. It might have changed since then but there is so much culture and history - the arcitecture, museums, shops and restaurants are amazing. I like big cities. Chicago would be another great place to live.

JI: Any desire to travel internationally?

KG29: Oh absolutely. It's my life goal to visit England, preferably LIverpool. I'd love to visit all of the Beatle sites, take pictures and whatnot. I'd love to do the famous walk across Abbey Road, see the houses they grew up in, see all that nerdy stuff.

JI: What does your husband think of your Beatles obsession?

KG29: He was impressed at first that I even liked the Beatles. Before we dated, he didn't know I knew who they were. However as we got to know one another better he has admitted to being completely surprsed that the obssession went so deep. I drug him to Beatlefest in Las Vegas, numerous Beatle cover bands around KC, the Beatles LOVE show in Vegas, even the John Lennon art show in town last year. I'm working on getting him to go to Chicago this year for Beatlefest, although he's hesitant because I'll be so far along by then.

I think he's come to accept it now and realize it's a big part of my life and he's even gotten in on the fun. I'm glad he loves the Beatles too - it makes all of these goofy events so much more fun.

JI: What's the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

KG29: If the weather permits, I like going to the Kansas CIty Zoo and seeing the animals. It really is an incredible place. However lately since I've been pregnant, sitting on the couch with my husband and watching movies has been a lovely alternative.

JI: What's the best part about being at a zoo?

KG29: Seeing the animals, getting fresh air and exercise, seeing kids fascinated with the animals, it's all fun. The Kansas City Zoo is a great zoo also in that it's set up for the animals, so it's spread out and the exhibits are nice and big.

JI: What's the best zoo you've visited outside of KC?

KG29: Probably the St. Louis Zoo. My husband and I are planning a visit to the San Diego zoo in the future...that will be amazing.

JI: Any final words of advice for your fellow YTers?

KG29: Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!! GO KU!
