JoeInterview's Member Feature
This week's interview features tulip. This interview was conducted by chips2001, Amyla516, and travbowman.
JoeInterview: How did you find YT?
tulip: I found YT through I AM Bored.com. I lurked the forums for a short time. I was particularly interested in the Generals forum. I found most members to quite intelligent. Many times my opinions were challenged by the comments of others. I do feel that I have become less rigid in my personal perspectives on matters because of these interactions.
JI: Do you find you enjoy debates with your family and friends as well?
T: Actually, it would have been a lost cause on my father. He would have made S196Dave and Explodo look like flaming tree huggers in comparison. I think I actually became interested in politics, the enviroment etc due to a relationship I had during my college years. It was difficult being a republican in Ann Arbor during the 70's. My boyfriend was very liberal and active in groups that supported the elimination of things such as nuclear energy, he organized anti -war rallys and that type of thing. Yeah, I hooked up with a tree hugger.
JI: What keeps you coming back to YT?
T: Other than the obvious addiction? The personalities of the members here are really diverse. I dont think I would encounter such a variety of people such as these in my average day. Some of them are just brilliant, some are nuts, some are hilarious. I also like the fact the age groups are diverse. It is good to see a point of view through the eyes of a teen and a person in their 20's. and 30's.
JI: What did you major in at UofM?
T: Nursing. I had attended another college prior. I got my R.R.T. credential from that then transfered over to the uni and got the nursing degree. In my career both degrees have complimented each other well. I think both experiences have really paid off on my years in critical care. I cant think of a better time in my life that being 20 something in Ann Arbor in the 70's . I knew the man that discovered the "mammalian reflex" in fresh water drownings, Doctor Marty Nemeroff. I assisted him with a 19 year old patient that had been submerged over 3 hours in very cold water. We resusitated this kid and I was thinking "grand another veggie". To my delight, 3 weeks later this kid was back in college. It is wonderful to encounter brilliant people.
JI: What's the worst part about nursing?
T: One cannot help but develope a relationship for the patient and family. We can not always succeed in saving life. Seeing a person die is always a loss to us, even if the death is a perhaps the best thing for a patient, it still hurts . It is hard not to become involved in the family circle. It is also tough for me to stfu, when I think the doc is a quack and not giving the best care. I have gotten in very hot water over this at least 2 times. The physical demands are rough as well as exposures to illnesses. I went through 6 months of treatment due to one exposure. I knew the job was tough when I took it.
JI: When did you move to Texas?
T: I came to Dallas in 1982. I left my job as assistant director of cardio-pulmonary services and took a staff position in Dallas. Dallas in the 80's was a really fun town. It was also a bit scary moving to a place where you knew no one. I worked at a large teaching hospital, it was a great time. I had opportunites to participate in research and even presented my own study in a forum at a national convention.
JI: Have you developed a Texan accent over the past 25 years?
T: I was born in the south and raised by southern parents in the north for some of my life. I still think I maintain a strong Michigan accent. The last time I traveled to Michigan, I thought all my old friends sounded Canadian. Its the "o" word! I think I may have a slight accent with a very few words. Most people in the DFW area do not have strong accents if compared to East and West Texas. I did acquire a Texas "palate"., I require jalapenos at almost every meal.
JI: What's your favourite tex-mex dish to order/make?
T: Make? LMAO! I do make a great spanish omelet. I adore carne asada and fajitas. The very best places to dine are the little mom and pop type restaurants. They take cooking to a higher level than some of the Tex-Mex chains. One has to over look the ripped vinyl on the chairs, staticky mexican radio music and tacky wall art but then thats part of the charm.
JI: How, what or who helped you form your political opinions?
T: The late 60's and early 70's had alot to do with forming my opinions. It was a time of change. Students began to question and challenge the status quo. Protests regarding the Viet Nam war, pushing for women's rights, protests against racial prejudice and the "sexual revolution" transformed this country. I am not sure how history will view that generation in another 50 years but I think it will stand out as one of the most exciting and politically and socially transforming times in our history.
JI: Why aren't kids as politically active today as they were back in the 60s/70s? It seems as though there are still many battles to be won . What can get kids back into politics?
T: I don't really know the answer to this question, I suspect a draft would peak peoples interests though. Perhaps we as a people have become apathetic. The world has changed alot in the past 40 years. Information is accessable in immense amounts and faster than can really be comprehended. People have busier lives. It could be that there is no issue people are passionate about.
JI: What's the most important issue to you today when it comes to voting?
T: No doubt healthcare. I am appalled that we turn our backs on over 40 million US citizens every day. This is a shame on our country. I think guaranteeing healthcare to all citizens would be cheaper than it is now. So many heathcare dollars are wasted on the insured by unnecessary tests. I have witnessed so many BS procedures to make the hospitals money it makes me cringe in anger. This is one issue that is not going to go away.
JI: Who presents a bigger problem to the health care industry today--drug companies or insurance companies?
T: The whole machine needs to be reworked. Medicare , Medicaid, Hospital's, insurance and pharmaceutical's. The current system is not working in this country.
JI: Any particular reason you went with "Tulip" as a screenname?
T: Yes, T.U.L.I.P is an acronym for the 5 points of calvinism. The essential doctrines concerning salvation, which the Puritans and all good Christians cling to, are summed up in the acronym T.U.L.I.P.
Total Depravity
Unconditional Election
Limited Atonement
Irresistible Grace
Perseverance of the Saints
JI: Have you always held to this set of religious beliefs?
T: I was an atheist for many years. I had determined there was no God based upon my observation of people claiming to be religious. I became curious why christians believed as they did. My belief has evolved over the years. I have read the bible from front to back at least 15 times. Having said that, the acronym may need an additional 2 or 3 petals.
JI: If you add a 'p' and a 't', it could be 'pulp tit'! Do you believe that religion can be joked about?
T: Sure, I know a bunch of religious jokes. I think anything can be joked about if the intent is clear it is lighthearted. One has to be careful as jokes are often used to mask the truth and can run the risk of offending others.
JI: How do you imagine you are perceived by your fellow YTers?
T: Quite a mix, Some people like me some do not. Some think I am bright others do not. I think overall I am the crazy, cat lady of YT.
JI: And how do you perceive your fellow YTers? Are they people, or just words on a screen? Would you like to attend a meet-up of all the regulars?
T: They are certainly people. I would love to meet some of them in person at a YT meetup. Actually one is being planned for the DFW area of Texas now. My guess most folks on this site are hard working and decent.
JI: Who do you think would be the most interesting YTer(s) to meet in person?
T: There are so many! Victory Rider and Harleygal, Abzurd, Newlyfree, Skade, w8in, S196Dave and fruity, Raphael, K8, Holly, dacash, Kepi, Noldor, IRL, Postallbear, Roselady, cry, sofey, jai, wNs, camelboy, johnsonjudit, cubs, fission, Noldor,JealousBlues, IceQueen, Brunnen, Boredefu ( that fecker). I know I missed a lot of people! I like the majority of folks on this sight, even the ones not so nice.
JI: Have you ever posted something that you wish you could take back?
T: LMAO!!!!!!! of course! Posting while exhausted or had one too many brews can do this. i dont think many can claim they never made a post they regretted. If nothing else it gave others more to post about.
JI: Speaking of brews, what's your drink of choice?
T: Lite beers mostly. I do have an affinity for Tuaca but the hangover is not worth it. I have seen people do some really stupid crap while drinking Tuaca. It does not seem as potent at first but watch out! For colds I mix Tuaca with apple schnapps. It is my version of Nyquil.
JI: What's the best way to spend a rainy Sunday?
T: Curled up on the sofa, watching an old movie that I had not seen in years. Hot cocoa works well too. If the weather is warm I like to sit on the covered porch and have coffee and watch the lawn and flowers get watered.
JI: Any words of wisdom to share with your fellow YTers?
T: Life is a long journey, watch your step.
