I saw the trailer, and thought to myself "After I read the book, I wondered why I had bothered." Probably I won't see the movie.

I love Moulin Rouge because it did whatever it damn well pleased whether you stuck your nose up at it or not. It was made with confidence.

No, i just admire directors that do what they feel like. I enjoy Tarantino for the same reason.

Let's not ruin this thread by talking about how awful Moulin Rouge is!
One week left! I'll see this next Saturday at a matinee.

I smoke cigars in West Egg, and used to work in East Egg.

The Great Gatsby was dull as dishwater so honestly I'm honestly okay with any changes they might make. Might make for an improvement.
I will say this though, Moulin Rouge was vastly more entertaining, engaging and memorable than the Great Gatsby, so truth be told I have very little to look forward to in this movie.

This is getting mixed reviews from the critics; makes me want to see it even more.

the only sure thing seems to be leo gives an amazing performance
that alone is enough to get me excited
i'm not too optimistic about the rest of the movie though
and the more i think about it, the more i hate tobey being cast as nick

When I saw Tobey was in it, I said "oh yeah, Leo got him that part, no doubt".
Leo giving a great performance is enough to push me to see it.
Going tomorrow to a matinee!
I'll report back!

Just got back.
Personally, I loved it. Also the husband admitted he not only didn't hate it, he liked it!
I did not see it in 3D, but the effects that I could tell were supposed to be in 3D weren't too distracting, either.
Leo's a perfect Jay Gatsby; that's exactly how I imagined that character to be.
I didn't appreciate the rap music, tbh, but did like Lana Del Ray's track and a few of the others in the film.
Tobey Maguire didn't bother me as badly as initially expected, either.
I LOVED that I read the book before watching this film; I noticed so many little nuances mentioned in the book.
Loved it.
GIVE LEONARDO AN OSCAR ALREADY, DAMNIT!

it was ok. the style, when used correctly to emphasize the lavish lifestyles and the dream and all that, worked incredibly well. otherwise it was annoying as sh-t. strong performances all around, especially by Edgerton and DiCaprio. Daisy was horribly underwritten and made the love triangle completely boring and inane to me.
i liked it for the most part, though. the middle contained a lot of fun and every scene with Gatsby was pretty good

Leo was great, imo.
Daisy's not a three dimensional character in the book; she's vapid and shallow and Gatsby's obsessed with a totally undeserving nitwit.

I just finished the book and had a hard time picturing Tobey Macguire as Nick. In my mind he kept bursting into tears.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I did notice some things on a surface level that Luhrman missed:
Myrtle was fat, or voluptuous at the very least.
Jordan had brown skin and was most likely mulatto, though she had to hide it because of the times.
Tom Buchannon was a very big man, standing much taller than Gatsby. As far as I can tell, Joel Edgerton stands at about the same height as Leonardo Dicaprio in the film.
Jay-Z would have made Fitzgerald's ears hurt. Baz Luhrman don't give a sh*t, though, because this movie is about him.

I don't remember anything saying Jordan had brown skin. She's blonde, so that'd look pretty weird.

Numerous times Nick mentions Jordan's "browned" or "tanned" skin in the book.
