the original scared the piss out of me as a kid but it doesnt hold up so im really excited to see a modern adaptation and i'm excited to review it

i'm getting somewhat annoyed at the amount of blatant viral marketing i'm seeing for this across the internet
3 months ago - Saturday 9/9/17 - 1:04:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
every major horror release in the past few years has had some kind of viral marketing
3 months ago - Saturday 9/9/17 - 1:08:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
that's true
it's just been especially obnoxious with this one
or maybe i've just noticed it especially this time
3 months ago - Saturday 9/9/17 - 1:16:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
strange thing is i haven't really noticed any
like i know it's out there, i just haven't encountered it somehow

This looks like it's going to suck because the trailers I've seen focus entirely on the clown

The book doesn't have much clown action that I remember
And clowns aren't scary
Only annoying people think clowns are scary
Thus horror movies about clowns are annoying, the old movie sucked

Maybe I'm wrong - I haven't seen every trailers - but if this is mostly about the clown then it's automatically terrible

it is a great movie

all the kids were perfectly cast and did a great job

the dialogue was funny at times

the movie was genuinely creepy and had good scares at the same time
most movies have a hard time with either one of those

ahmed can go f-ck himself

Did they include the sex scene? I remember a sex scene in the book.

they are never going to film a child orgy for a wide release movie

Just making sure you were paying attention.

Strong opening, I liked how dark and foreboding it looked, and I feel a lot more was at play than it just raining. I can't fault the way the atmosphere was crafted. This was a constant throughout the film.

However

The atmosphere had to constantly battle against things that oft times ended up overpowering it and ruining scenes. Richie's jokes, while part of his character, often offset tense or spooky moments to the point the movie suffered. No doubt the thing that killed any atmosphere or aesthetic the movie had going for it absolutely, was the Zack Snyder style in which it was presented. The narrative aspect took second billing to the films 'moments'. Half of the losers club had very little third dimension because the beats stringing together Pennywise jumping out of various hiding places was something no one involved in the film cared about.

I haven't watched it yet, but now I've heard they made this all about the clown and not a super sinister evil that manifests itself as the clown?

Lame.

I might read this incredibly long book one of these days, though.

it's not though
take away every scene with that clown and I think it would still be a good movie

a lot less intense and no longer horror, but I think it could work just as well as a stand by me type of movie

I was 13 when I read it so I don't really remember a lot but the scariest parts of the book were about the monster in the form of the creature from the black lagoon. Clowns aren't scary and the photo going around of him doing a "creepy smile" with a balloon is just... trying too hard.

I've still made plans to see it because of the box office success and mayyy have to retract my trash talking but I have really low expectations.

i thought It was...okay. i liked the cast a lot. the kids were fantastic and had a lot of chemistry. Finn Wolfhard is gonna be a star. Skarsgard brought a lot to the role and was genuinely creepy.

the Stand By Me / Goonies parts of the film were the best. really fun and humorous.

the horror parts less so. if there was a flow chart for this film, the arrows would all lead to one box that says 'jump scare'. some really great, eerie scenes being built that ended up just going OOGA BOOGA! haha startled you!

it got repetitive really quick

i felt the studio fingerprints all over this thing. there's a much better film here somewhere

but there were littles things i liked a lot. and it was exponentially better than the mini-series

the molestation side-story was cheap and eye rolling. how many times is a movie going to think that the only way to show childhood trauma and mistrust of adults is to have a young girl being taken advantage of by a sweaty drunk father? knock it the f-ck off

it could be
but there is a LOT that is gross and hackey about the book (i like the book, but King is a pretty gross dude a lot of the time)
3 months ago - Thursday 9/14/17 - 2:49:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
every king movie is markedly less gross than his books from what I can tell
3 months ago - Thursday 9/14/17 - 2:51:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
yeah, i'd agree with that. i only have the one problem with the film. the book has a f-cking preteen gangbang
