The latest in the modest, low budget "The Star Wars" series from rising arthouse Disney.

This will probably be alright. I'm more wary than I was after seeing Godzilla, director Rian Johnson's previous attempt at a big budget thing.

Hoping it isn't too washed out looking or a couple hours of military types running around. I'd hate for this to be Godzilla all over again but with a Death Star instead of a big lizard.

Darth Vader will be in it only briefly, and rightly so, but he'll be magnificent. That's one thing I'm certain of.

Not Rian Johnson, Gareth Edwards.

So, what did you think?

It was ok. Nothing revolutionary but we shouldn't expect that from a Star Wars film now I guess.

-
Some parts felt too much like a superhero film TBH, the robot wasn't funny or interesting or voiced appropriately, Black (armored) storm troopers.... why? discount pooty CGI Admiral Akbar, 3PO and R2s random unnecessary cameo, The blind monk would have been awesome if he didn't open his mouth. Sometimes the score felt a bit off and the rouge one title was LOL (They should never have tried to compete with the iconic Star Wars opener)

+ Quite fun, predictable in a comfortable way (We all know the story I guess), Leia , Grand Moff Tarkin was a boss, the new planets were fairly interesting, Vader and the space battles had a bit of weight to them (Just an improvement over f*cking droid battles I guess)

I approve.

Also - The first half was a bit choppy, maybe an editing issue?

I thought it was one of the most action packed Star Wars films ever. Not really a dull moment in the whole film.
I liked how dark it was.
But...
The non Star Wars opening weirded me out.

Overall, I loved it.

Mixed to positive feelings.

After seeing Godzilla and now this I can see Gareth Edwards greatest strength is his ability to create a great sense of scale. I think this is only his third film, too. Very impressive he's landed Star Wars so soon.

This is the best looking star wars film. You can pause it at any moment and frame it. The beach attle in particular stood out to me. They could have had that battle in a muddy trench but went for a really nice beach setting. Clear waters, palm trees, very bright. I'm grateful none of the colour was drained out or toned down.

Then we have the acting. Jyn Erso was such a big nothing I forgot she was in it at times. Same ror most of tye rebels. I think Mads and Forest Whitaker were the only ones who had any effect on me.

Weirdly the best actor in it was Peter Cushing and he's been dead since, what, 1994? I caught a bit of uncanny valley but most of the time it looked very impressive.

Overall I find the film uneven but very much worth the money. I'll probably re-evaluate it later. It started good, lagged, then found its feet again in the second half. It did the dark and gritty thing without feeling forced (lol funny) and was nicely countered with the bright beach setting. I love seeing the old imperial garb and shiny floors, too.

The ending pretty much tipped the scales into positive for me.

Overall, out of the eight films, I rank this fifth. Possibly fourth.

Finally,
I'm so so happy they all died. Thanks for not being a bunch of wimps, Disney! Also thanks for leading it straight into Star Wars.

I did not like it

the movie was a snoozefest up until about half an hour in and then it was just.. ok until they
Actually said rogue one and left for the planet with the plans

Then it was a mess

The only cool part was
darth vader f-cking sh-t up in the last like... 3 minutes

I was kinda bored the whole time to be honest

Makes me much less excited for any other spin offs they have planned.

Explain yourself, boy.

I did like how
how everyone died. Made for a much better ending than if everyone lived/a noble sacrifice here or there. Definitely brought grounded realness

The one redeeming factor of the prequels was the best saber fight in all of the films, by far, is Episode 1

Empire
Jedi
Star Wars
Force Awakens/Rogue One

I do like the saberfights in the prequels bur I loved the blunt ferocity of the originals more. I liked the Kylo Ren/Rey fight quite a bit despite her skills coming from nowhere.

But they don't come from nowhere...that's the point.
The fan theories are awesome in why...

I loved the finn and kylo lightsaber fight just as much too

Every blow felt like it meant something. They both felt super untrained so it really was like they were both just doing the best they could. Nothing flashy. Just fighting

When the sabers clashed it wasn't smooth and fluttery like the prequels. I felt the power.

Exactly

One of the best fighting scenes in modern cinema

I love this, too. My first lightsabre duel so its special to me. I had an awesome darth maul toy as a kid and I memorised duel of the fates and hummed it relentlessly.
