What was the last movie you saw?
Give us a quick review.

I just saw Buried. I thought it was great. I normally find I difficult to get into a minimalist film but this had so much drama all packed inside a coffin. Ryan Reynolds was great as the lead character. The whole way through, I was expecting the typical Hollywood ending but was brutally surprised.

It's definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

visually great movie lacking in plot a bit though

Watched Breathless (À bout de souffle) a couple of days.

I really enjoyed it.
Some artistic European cinema elements (obviously) but overall, apart from the last scene, it was pretty easy to follow. I really enjoyed the back and forth between the male lead and female lead. It wasn't sappy or romanticised at all. They were just fun real people.

Valerian and the city of a thousand planets.

Visually stunning, but terrible. Not just 'not very good' but actually really really bad.

Dane De Haan and Cara Delevigne were so bad I was horribly embarrassed for them.

I was afraid about that after what Besson did to Adele Blanc-Sec.
Valerian as a graphic novel was a big influence on Star Wars and Mass Effect, and of course Babylon 5.

Stage Fright - This is an Alfred Hitchcock movie from 1950. It's not one of his best. It was just ok.

The last movie I saw that was surprisingly good was Treasure Island, also from 1950. This was Disney's first live action movie. It does have a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe to it. Well made and in color!

Just finished Birth of a Dragon.

A bit cheesy, but great for fans of fight.
A totally twisted angle on legends of the famous fight between Lee and Wong Jack Man.

Dark Tower - an incomprehensible mess

i saw A Ghost Story
it's pretentious but beautiful. it really should not work as well as it does. it's so strange and poetic and moving. i have a lot of ideas for what it all means but it would probably come out super rambly. i've never gotten so emotional about people in bedsheets

i also saw Wind River. which is a terrifically directed, well acted action movie that has...a lot of issues that left a sour taste in my mouth. i don't want to be an SJW or anything, but if your movie is primarily about Native Americans, maybe your lead actor should be an actual Native American? and i really don't want to get into how gross the third act is. but god it's so tense and well shot. it just tries to be intellectual and conscious, which not only falls flat but is so mangled

also Atomic Blonde is really f-cking fun if not also needlessly complex and poorly written. it's John Wick except it's trying to overcompensate and do too much. that stairwell scene is tight as sh-t tho

Detroit - brilliant acting. Plot-wise, you never really know how much is historically accurate, but sections are pleasingly taut. It works very hard to put you in the heart of the action, but is a little heavy handed on that front at times.

I can't wait to see Detroit.

I think Will Pouler has blossomed into a great actor.

It's a shame I still see him as the boy in School of Comedy.

Or Poultry as my phone insists it is.

He was incredible, tbh. He kinda always is.

John Boyega was the revelation, to me.

I saw Final Portrait with Geoffrey Rush as Alberto Giacometti. The acting is great, the movie good.

I'm such a big fan of Giacometti. Looking forward to this movie.

yeah, i'm really disappointed in Adam Wingard. i thought he was on a roll with You're Next and The Guest, which are two extremely fun and well made genre pieces, but Blair Witch was thuddingly disappointing and the reviews for Death Note are vicious

its been close to ten years since i watched the anime so theres a lot i dont remember about it so im judging the movie purely on its own as its own thing

the writing was just....... bad. i didnt like the girl or the dad's acting a bit. everyone else was fine. willem dafoe ive seen being called the stand out but like... he had like 10 lines. so of course he seems like the best pick but really i gotta go with L i thought he was the only one who went above my expectations. the direction was great! there were some scenes that were really cool (and one, hilariously awful scene) but for the most part the in-camera stuff was really good and i have to say i was really enjoying myself for a minute but the writing is just atrocious. like.. really really bad dialogue. pretty straightforward story that had a lot of potential but just fails

4/10
