The New Jersey indie filmmaker, made famous for his slacker comedy cult classics 'Clerks' and 'Mallrats,' is taking aim at a new genre: religious/political horror - - one he's helping to coin himself.
Smith has released the first trailer for his upcoming film, 'Red State,' a frightening look at religious extremism in America, based in part on anti-gay, anti-America Kansas pastor Fred Phelps. Frightening and thrilling for Smith: the film has no distributor yet; he plans on screening it at Sundance Film Festival, and then holding an auction for its rights in public view.
Long interested in religion - - he tackled the topic with his earlier film, 'Dogma' - - Smith is engaging in his first horror film, though he's long been a fan of the genre. John Goodman, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano and Michael Parks co-star in the thriller."

it was suddenly clear why Smith had to buy his own movie for $1.
for someone who made so many movies i enjoyed he made one of the biggest mistakes in movie making. there was no main character to follow or care about. every character in it is either unlikable or dies and the whole thing is pretty much summed up in john goodman's final words. Smith could of just wrote his thoughts on his blog and saved everyone the time and money.
I think thats funny because I havent enjoyed that many of his movies at all until this one.
Mallrats seemed good and clerks was ok.

He seems like a cool guy and tells an interesting story when you hear him talk though.
Ive alwyas wondered why I never really liked his movies when he seems personally like someone who is very likeable and entertaining.
