Let's discuss the mix of color and black and white in modern movies.

When did it work?
When was it unnecessary?
What would you like to see it used for?

my favourite ever is in stalker, when it goes into colour is breathtaking for me
was it stalker that made you think of this?

The Wizard of Oz is still the one that impacts me. The fact that the real world is drab and boring and Oz is the technicolor delight is so cool.

That simple device said everything to me about how the two worlds are related. I got it, even as a 7 year old.

I liked how Clerks 1 was in black and white. It was a reminder of how low budget it was and just added charm to the movie imo.

Not yet. The restored copy on the big screen will be projected 2-4 of June.

I think the little colored dress in Schindler's list was pure genius.

Wings of Desire was a great example too.

Pleasantville is great. I need to get a rewatch on.

I recently did a rewatch of that

Great movie!!

Yeah it's surprising to me how well Pleasantville holds up, but it really does.

I would say Schindler's List deserves a mention here.

Oh God
I think Schindler's List had an everlasting effect on me
I saw it when I was 6, much too young to comprehend
But I understood the scene with the little girl's coast t
I really think that scene had enough of an impact on me to help create the person I am today

When did it work?
Young Frankenstein. It was a spoof of the original black and white Frankenstein movies. And it lends that eerie quality to it.

When was it unnecessary?
Schindler's List. I think it would've been a better movie in color. Color would transport you to that time and place better than black and white.

What would you like to see it used for?
I would like to see it used as rarely as possible. As I said, color brings you more into the movie than bw.

That scene in Schindler's List wouldn't have affected me the way it did without the effect of color in black and white

That was a good use of color in black and white, and clever. I just think overall it would've made more of an impact if the movie was in color. It smacks of reality. IMO.

I found the use of colour in Schindler's List great and don't think it would have added anything to the movie (for me) if it had been made totally in colour.
I also like the aesthetics of Sin City.

Logan Noir is pretty cool! It doesnt really add a whole lot to the movie but i like how it affected the light effects, especially in the terrarium

Pretty much what I was going to say. I don't think the color would have had the same effect to the viewer if the movie was all color. In fact, when I read the book many years ago, the Kansas farm was pretty much described as all grey. So to go from the drab, grey Kansas to the colorful fantasy world is perfect.

Schindler's List is more the use of colour in a Black and white movie. Making it in black and white gave it a greater feeling of documentary evidence, with the closing scenes presented in colour as an update.

In Memphis Belle, they used genuine black and white footage of B17's in combat to emphasis the historical context of the story.

The opening of Paint Your Wagon was very well done. The credits were backed by black and white drawings that gradually increased in colour until the last drawing morphed into the opening scene.

is this an appropriate venue to discuss how grating and bad The Artist was
