I really enjoyed it.

I always like movies about 4 characters interacting in a limited space.

The main guy who owns the house was excellent. His character was fascinating. Totally stole the scene whenever he was on screen.

What CK said. Favorite film of the year so far. The plot and perspective are constantly shifting, and it always feels one step ahead of you. The three stars do a terrific job. Alicia Vikander really put herself on the map, Domhnall Gleeson continues to grow and impress, and Oscar Isaac maintains his hot streak. Creepy, intelligent, and thought-provoking.

I f*cking LOVED that Ava was playing him all along. The end, where she leaves him trapped in the room is so cold. So calculated. Utterly wonderful. The whole movie had moments of genuine uneasiness that was very skilfully done. It had fascinating things to say on the ideas of consciousness and intelligence. It left my mind absolutely buzzing.

I thought this was interesting as well- - it seemed like watching some sort of 3/4 player chess game, and each character was a step ahead of the other all the time...and chess was referenced many times in this movie too.

I also loved that Ava was playing him too. At first I thought it was terribly objectifying (literally) to women but i got over that at the end / didn't bother me too much to begin with, but I think that shift made the movie all the better.

The most chilling part to me was that he basically manipulated AI to escape, essentially- - and he was utterly successful. Too successful. It's like he expected it to work but then when it worked he was so surprised by it.

One other part I liked was how this was [/spoiler]

well f*ck whatever

how this was sort of an origin story. The creator (I've forgotten his name) was referred to/referred to himself as God, Ava is pretty much like Eve, and the assumption is that her kind is going to procreate in the way that they can (create others?), take over earth, etc.

So great. I loved it.

or maybe more like Lilith.

But I had thought about the Garden of Eden in many scenes, with shots of her against/in front of a garden both outside and inside the facility. I just assumed Eve because of the whole vowel v vowel thing. And perhaps the (assumed) whole creation of her kind.

I liked that it turned the 'sexbot' trope on it's head. Like in AI, you're MEANT to find Jude Law attractive and empathy-inducing. The scenes where our ginger protagonist finds all the fembot parts in the wardrobes was one of the least sexual things I've ever seen, and genuinely perturbing.

yep this was neat and beard guy was the best
i had one minor plot gripe, not sure if i missed it but
i thought he reprogrammed the doors to all open in case of a powercut. i get that she didn't give a f*ck about him as soon as she was out, but i didn't see her reprogramming it back to lock him in again, so i'm not sure why he was still trapped when the power went again at the end. unless she was just being straight up mean in a deleted scene they didn't even show

I loved it. Lately it seems all the movies I love are crazy psycho-dramas.

I did enjoy how in the end she was using him the whole time. It would have been so easy to have them escape together for a happy ending but this was a guy she knew less than a week who was working for the man who created her and whom she hated.

And the dance scene was amazing.

Also I feel dumb that it took me watching it twice to understand the title. I thought it was just meant to reference that it was about robots. Reading the tagline made me realize it. By removing the 'deus' from 'deus ex machina' it reflects removing god from the act of creation.

I didn't love it. I didn't enjoy the main actress and I found that the main dude was pretty dumb.

Interesting to see other's reactions. My friend saw Ava as cold and calculating with no empathy, like a machine. I see her as simply fighting for her survival as any person would. Who says she wouldn't be empathetic towards those who deserve it? Of course she isn't towards her tormentors/enslavers.
