Does it have to do with the surface tension of the water evaporating off of the toothpicks? Sorry, I just sucked all the fun out of that post.

i dont know if evaporation has anything to do with it, it seems more physical, like the water is pushing them

Just guessing here...

The toothpicks were actually broken in half to each form 2 arms of the initial asterisk. Putting water on the center causes the toothpick to straighten out.

No wait... Photoshopped.

I'm too lazy to try to reproduce or figure out how this trick works. Someone else reproduce the effect please and explain it to me in understandable terms.

"No its Satans doing." - yep, that is what it would have looked like 100 years ago, before "science" was invented.

"No its Satans doing."

My dad taught me that trick ages ago. I can't believe someone actually put this up, as if it's some magic trick. I'll bet sooner or later someone will put up videos of grass-shooting here.

The absoption of water by dry wood will cause it to revert back to its original shape, because it's been growing straight for so long. Just like how some origami flowers(specifically lotus flowers) bloom from a bud-shape when in contact with water. it tries to go back to a flat shape, but blooms instead because of the folds.

Like anyone really needed that explanation.

Tried it (hesitantly). One drop, no. Maybe another drop? No. Surely a third drop of water would move something. Nope. Nothing happened. By the way, I did wait a while between drops.

The star is made from 5 long toothpicks that have been almost broken in half and with a few fiblres bended. If you look closely you will see that there are no pointed parts of the toothpicks in the middle.
When the water goes on the bended parts they try to straighten out as explained above. That causes the effect.

Well, if VictoryRider tried it, and it didnt work, then its clearly satans doing, everyone get the pitchforks and torches!

I still think its Satans doing. No matter how many scientifically provable theories u bombard me with.
