Fighting for carpool rights for the unborn.

Yep, I'd def. do that.

i saw a report on this last week and it's still the most ridiculous thing i've heard all of this month. putting fetus vs human argument aside, this kind of nitpicking is missing the point of having an HOV lane in the first place - to cut down on traffic and pollution. boo to the coalition, boo!

I agree charmschool, this is absolutely absurd. Can't they find something else to fight over, ppl please!

I think this is the most retarded thing I've ever read. An unborn child validating somebody's desire to use a carpool lane? That's a hell of a way to take advantage of your child before it's even had a chance to live.

in Utah there is a case of a woman trying this and getting a ticket.

She fought it and ended up with a heavier ticket for TWO PASSENGERS BEHIND THE WHEEL, aka 2 people in the drivers seat, hahaha

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 3/25/06 - 5:22:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
the said report i came across was about an arizona woman who contested a ticket she got for driving alone on the carpool lane. she claimed her fetus should count as the second "person". she lost her appeal, however.

i don't usually stress out over minor, superfluous protests but this one is really making me fume!

I hardly think something like the Supreme Court would decide cases on abortion and such based on the stare decisis of HOV lane policies. If they do, then I weep for the country.

What worries me is what's *behind* this coalition, 'cause it surely isn't carpool lane rights. How long are women pregnant at a time versus the benefit gained from using this lane.

What is seems to me, is that it's all about passing a law saying a fetus is a person. Then, of course, if a law says a fetus is a person...

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 3/25/06 - 9:27:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
this is the comment I left for them:
The HOV lane is for 2 or more people (sometimes 3 or more) and a fetus doesn not count as a person. If it did then it would be called a person not a fetus. The HOV lane is for people carpooling to work, not for pregnant women who don't have the patience to wait in traffic. If your going to the hospital to give birth thats one thing, but being lazy and using your unborn baby as an reason to break the law is ludacris. I don't think your baby would apreciate being used a tool to lessen the time of your car trip. There is a reason that is is illegal. For the same reason that ghosts, blow-up dolls, pets, and any other mumbo jumbo besides real people don't count in the HOV lane.

That is EXACTLY what this is about... they want to have it recognized that a fetus is alive at conception, and lead that to criminalize abortion...

I think the site is a joke. Reading through it, there is barely any information offered. Their "mission statement" is non-existent.

I think this whole thing is a non-issue, and those women in the news should stop whining and pay their tickets. Pregnant women already have "pregnant parking", anyway.

There's a slight difference between actual civil disobediance, say for the rights of man, and 'civil disobediance' to save a lazy woman 5 minutes. How can they quote Gandhi?!?
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 3/25/06 - 2:27:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
Are they serious?

What brats.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 3/25/06 - 6:55:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
that's dumb. as far as I'm concerned, if the unborn is a person, then maybe ok to the carpool thing. but in that case, abortion is murder. if you think the other way around (it's not a person) then you can't use the carpool. don't try to fight both ways :P so I women might try to use her fetus as an escuse to use the carpool lane but then they go kill it? either way, I think the whole thing is dumb.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 3/25/06 - 8:26:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
dammit i hate these kinds of things. this is almost as bad as letting really fat people park in the disabled spots!
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 3/25/06 - 9:42:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
fine if they want to be lazy let them have it, but we have to concider it another human all the way across the board.

buy a movie ticket gotta buy two, buy an airplane ticket gotta buy two, is your unborn babie a boy? well thats jstu too bad no more public bathrooms for you unless they are both sexs which you dont see to much anymore. so fine if they want to use that bullpoo excuse lets shove it right back in there face and they can get what they deserve

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 3/26/06 - 1:13:42 AM EST (GMT-5)
How absolutely ridiculous. I think that kids shouldn't count for the carpool lane, either. The idea behind it is to get people (adults) to ride together (when possible) instead of taking separate cars. Kids cannot drive themselves and therefore should not count.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 3/26/06 - 4:33:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
I believe that 'ridiculous' is exactly what they are out to do.

a couple of people have brought up the possibility of a legal precedent to count fetuses as people (if laws are passed in favor of this movement)

I do not think that is the case, however. I believe it is exactly the opposite, in fact.

They seem to be using a tactic i like to call "Taking your opponent's arguments to the extreme and using the backlash to your advantage"

think: if enough pregnant women make a big enough stink about the carpool thing, eventually lawmakers are going to get sick of the whole damn thing and pass laws AGAINST a fetus adding to the car's total occupancy. this implies, of course that the fetus does not legally count as a person (in this scenario, at least). +1 for pro-choice.

I honestly doubt that this will happen, and think we should all take it for the joke that it probobally is.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 3/26/06 - 11:43:53 AM EST (GMT-5)
That is the most moronic thing I've ever seen in my entire life. Anyone who tries it deserves a ticket. I like that a woman got an extra ticket for 2 people behind the wheel. She deserved it for being so stupid. Carpool lanes are for 2 or more people going to work, to cut down on traffic and pollution. Not for a lazy woman to use to get to the mall faster. I'm sure some women would have a good reason, like being in labor. But if she's in labor she shouldn't be driving in the first place. She should get someone else to drive or call 911.

Even if they have another agenda, getting a law saying a fetus is a person, it's still stupid. It won't get them anything but negative publicity and will make them look like big idiots.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 3/26/06 - 1:25:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree with ReaLLyBoReD7. I was actually thinking that about paying for 2 people, especially the airline tickets. There are some people out there who aren't happy unless they complain about something!
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 3/26/06 - 6:14:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think it's a good idea in that pregnant mothers are under a lot of stress and allowing them the use of the carpool lane would help to alleviate some of that stress. That's not necessarily "laziness". Honestly. Whoever said that needs to carry a child right now for the next 9 months.

I agree that it's ridiculous that they want the fetus to be considered another "person" in the carpool lane; I just see it as helping out the mother, not labelling the fetus as a person.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 3/26/06 - 6:50:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
Pretty sure that's site is a joke.

Look at the "bumper sticker" section and tell me it's a serious website.

13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 3/27/06 - 1:57:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
Sure let's let them count as passengers, and start changing other laws to include fetuses as human. Then, next time a mother-to-be miscarries, she can be charged for neglect!
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 3/27/06 - 3:48:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
Deman... that was a little harsh on the miscarraiges being neglect. You shouldn't joke about things like that. For some on here its a VERY personal issue
its a VERY touchy subject for me personally
