the favorite quote thread got me curious about favorite idioms!

I like them. I know they can be so cheesy, but I love hearing origins and finding out new ones from different cultures/locations.

When it comes to idioms, nothing comes close to the military. They have the BEST.

Just a few favorites:
Pucker factor
Soup sandwich
Clusterf*ck
Zero dark thirty
Voluntold
Squared away

Thick as thieves (I like the alliteration)
Pot calling the kettle black/pot calling the grass green
spirit of the stairs/staircase wit (means thinking of the perfect response just a little too late, like as you're leaving. Think "jerk store" from Seinfeld)

Ones I'm pretty sure are (mostly) southern:

Bless their heart/bless their cotton socks (this is usually a polite way of calling someone stupid)
playing possum (pretending, especially pretending to be sleeping)
See you in the funny papers! (does anyone say this except my grandmother? It means see you later)

I always read that in Jesse Ventura's voice. He would say it a lot while commentating.

"Beat around the bush" always makes me giggle. I blame Bloodhound Gang.
