A New York woman who had been missing for 42 years has been found safe in Massachusetts, the Times Herald-Record reports.

Flora (Florence) Stevens was 36 when she disappeared from Monticello, New York, on August 3, 1975, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office told the newspaper. Her husband returned to pick her up after dropping her off for a doctor’s appointment, but she wasn’t there.

Maybe running away from an abusive marriage.

this has to be some sort of record for someone who went missing and was found alive.

Well, there was this Japanese sniper who didn’t believe the war was over. His former sergent had to put on his uniform and go talk to him.
But i don’t think it was as long.

I don't know, the Mossad have found some pretty old Nazis.

I was thinking about that but I don't think some of those old Nazis were actually missing. Klaus Barbie for example lived under an alias in Boliviia between 1965 and 1971. Before that he had worked for US intelligence and then for German intelligence. His whereabouts were known but it took years to extradite him.

Polish authorities are trying to extradite a guy from Minnesota right now. He apparently just came to the U.S. after the war, and didn't tell anybody he had been an SS commander, and no one questioned it. He was hiding in plain sight, basically.
I don't know how actively they were looking for him, since he wasn't a big name.

So he wasn't missing as such. A lot of these really old guys were living under their own names and with their pre war families, just no one had connected then to any crimes.

In the case of that guy it seems like they have spent "years" trying to bring him to trial, so he can't exactly be desribed as missing. The story liking him to atrocities seems to have come to light in 1968, so it would mean that he would have has to remain unidentiified until around 2014 to be missing for 46 years. The text ib the article is very confusing. They onlt identify him by one name, which they claim is the assumed name he was living under, yet they make references to a person of that name being identified as the commander of a unit that comitted war crimes.

I think moving to another country, misrepresenting your background, and living there since 1949 in order to escape prosecution for war crimes would qualify as "missing," myself...

As to how they're identifying him, the prosecutor didn't release the last name, but the AP did some digging and identified him as Michael Karkoc. I don't believe he lived under an assumed name at all - that's just an anglicized version of his given name.

I think you are only missing wen someone starts lokking for you. There are also many stories of children who were adopted finding out they have brothers and sisters still living. I wouldn't consider them to be missing persons. Just people who lost touch.
