I titled an email I sent tonight with that title. I feel like it evokes something. Probably because gauges sounds like ages. Like it sounds like a mispronunciation of sleep of ages.

Which is apparently a Brazilian musician...

But anyway... it snowed. I did a 180 in my car because I forgot to turn on the snow button before pulling out of a convenience store parking lot. I ordered snow tires this morning.

I was going to title this journal, Storm of the Century. There’s a bunch of Stephen King fans on here, right? Sweep of Gauges sounds similar.

But there’s one hill that I had to putter up. Started to fishtail once or twice going like fifteen miles per hour.

What is your track record like driving in snow? I have successes and failures. Some failures that have turned into successes. I never got into an accident on snowy roads. But I’ve had to be pulled out of someone’s lawn once.

Um

My dad once had to drive me to the airport in the snow. The car spun around on the highway several times. That was the worst.

I've only driven through a little in Idaho. It freaked me out because I hadn't done it before but it was only a dusting and I was behind a truck..
. The second worst as a passenger was going through the snoqualmie pass. It was coming down hard but cars were driving super fast and you could hardly see and somehow we ended up surrounded by an army convoy.

Storm of the century was a good concept.

Never read it. I read a bunch of Stephen King but didn’t read that one.

Oh. It was a screenplay. Hmm. That was 1999? Wow. I feel old,

The commercials for that were really dramatic. I didn’t watch it. Or read the published screenplay.

I drive like an old lady in the snow. It has a high success rate. I usually am a relatively cautious driver though. Though I drive a little fast.

One time I ended up in a yard, had to back up a hill like a pendulum and swing up a hill that led to the edge of this person’s driveway.

Was cursing a lot when that happened.

yeah. the mist sounds kind of similar. where he has like. small town... something weird happens... all the people have to band together... evil wins.

actually a lot of the books are like that. but he's from maine… so his vantage point is always small towns. i think it allows him to have eerie creepy events that don't disrupt the main character. like...

over yonder on this side of town. evil happened... now let's get back to the unwinnable battle against evil our protagonist is fighting.

it slips more but the force passes through the whole system. in front wheel if the rear end moves you have a lot less force that you can have acting on the rear end. i did one eighties all the time in my front wheel drive car. at least once or twice a winter.

My first ever experience driving in snow was in my 88 IROC-Z...yikes.

Nowadays I just try to not get in it, but if I do, my Durango has taken great care of me. Just drive slow and carefully. 4x4

But it doesn't snow enough here or even when it does the snow doesn't last long enough to warrant getting out in it if you can avoid it. I've only ever been caught out in it before.

We don't get much snow here so people suck at driving in it. My dad took me up to the mountains to teach me how to drive in the snow with no four wheel drive or chains or anything. I'm more worried about other drivers.

Last year I got tail gated so bad by a lady that when we got to the light I actually got out of my car to yell at her. Which is a big deal for me, I'm not confrontational at all but it was like my anxiety built up so much it turned into confidence. I had changed lanes 6 times trying to get her off my ass and she followed me each time. She said she was told to stay close to the car in front of you in snow so you won't spin out. She had about a quarter mile between us after i told her how stupid that was, among other things

Does anyone want to know what Sweep of Gauges means?

As a quality tech, there are gauges. And you see, gauges are important. Because gauges are like flashlights. And it’s actually really dark inside of CNC equipment. So, using the brilliant light of gauges, we can see inside the machine!

Isn’t that f*cking wonderful!

But, there is a monster that lurks not in the machine, but in what we call, the work environment.

Wear and tear and drops and bumps. Oil and dust and moisture and temperature. It’s everywhere!

So... in order to combat the evil in this battle, we must be diligent. And we must know and correct and improve, AT ALL COSTS! The enemy never sleeps. The enemy hides in a careless operator, the shifting seasons, the time and hour, even within the gauge itself...

So...

I walked in a thousand square foot area from station to station verifying things were labeled.

and what i can't stand. speaking of tailgating in snowstorms. is the guy who has a huge freaking pick up truck. and he tailgates you and flies past you. i really hate how aggressively they drive in the snow.

the roads were perfectly clear today though. we're serious about the roads when it snows around here. they had been plowed before i left work last night and were completely dry by the time i went into work today.

bah... i really should get the drifting stuff down. but it's probably not the best idea. no need. slow and steady.

or something. wins the race of not being in a ditch i suppose.

nope. completely missed the mark with that one.

just all a bit of turtle up in here for no reason. well. it's bugs bunny at least. everyone likes bugs bunny, right? not just old racist nonsense, right? hand drawn all of it. like 30 frames a second. it was a true craft...

when's thanksgiving going to get here? that's more interesting than this.

beep beep. snow driving. beep beep.

i need to sleep now.

OMG.
Is THAT what they're thinking?

I have been wondering for years why people always tailgate me in the snow, even when the other lane is wide open and they aren't stuck behind me. Maybe this myth is more widespread than that one dumb lady. Hmm.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 2:10:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
I tailgate sometimes. Not in the snow, but if you’re going forty five in a fifty five, I will ride your ass. Or depending on if I’m late for something I might tailgate you if you’re not going 65 in a 55. Snow really makes me be a responsible driver. Without it I can be a little aggressive on the road.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 2:30:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
I hate tailgaters. It's a speed limit.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 2:49:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
i don't do it on the highway or anything. it's windy country roads that aren't truly appreciated unless you're going ten miles over the speed limit.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 3:32:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
So go around.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 4:09:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
I do when I have the chance. I have no problem passing people.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 4:16:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
Again, windy country roads. Mostly turns with straightaways and passing lanes every once in a while. Seems like there’s cars in the other lane often when the passing lanes come up.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 4:41:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
tailgating when there isn't an opportunity to pass is just rude and probably counterproductive
all you're gonna be doing is stressing out someone who's probably already not a confident driver if they're going that slow
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 5:02:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don’t aggressively ride bumpers but I will try and convince someone to drive faster by my proximity.
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 5:06:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
i don't think that works and i don't think you should try and make people drive faster than they're comfortable driving
24 days ago - Saturday 11/17/18 - 5:16:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
I am guilty of impoliteness at times. Need to keep my personal drive though. Don’t want to succumb to the will of others at all times. Kind of a short sighted mantra.
